Growing up, I thought it was just me who had the whole phone anxiety. So when texting and email became a thing, it was a godsend. Turns out it was my whole generation for some reason.
Anyways, the older I get, the more I’m dreading getting random texts and trying to keep up a chat/text based conversation is exhausting.
I’m still not a phone guy, but I’m morphing back to an email guy. It just feels like less pressure to respond. I can get back to you days or weeks later, and vice versa, and I have time to compose and organize my thoughts and I don’t feel bad about writing a long letter catching up instead of rapid fire texting and stopping for a reply. True is it a wall of text, but it’s not as daunting when you can read it on a computer and I can type it cleaner via a real keyboard.
Also, for some reason I don’t mind dm’ing via an app/website randomly compared to directly texting someone. Feels less personal. I guess it’s a hold over from when I just did from pc to pc instead of phone to phone where (like email) I figure they see it whenever they check their messages and open the website/app.
Me: why did… text me at 3 am in the morning?!
Also me: hey my friends messaged me on messenger/Instagram while I was sleeping, I wonder what funny thing they said

I have OCD (genuine OCD, not just saying I have it). One of the issues I've developed because of it is that I absolutely NEED to respond to any text message I get as soon as I receive it (for VERY complicated psychological reasons; I'm working on it but its difficult). so when I'm trying to sit and enjoy a video game or read a book/comic I find it INCREDIBLY intrusive to receive texts, especially if the text isn't important. doubly so if it's a group chat I have with some of my best friends because I can expect dozens of messages about things I don't particularly care about, and its not exactly something I can set a boundary about. its definitely quicker/more convenient in general than calling people but I really do resent essentially having to be available on at least some level all day.

Not sure if it's the same thing but I don't know how people keep track of 20+ servers on discord. I can hardly keep track of 5 of them.
I will say I'm still more of a text guy than a talk person. I'm the "DM me on Microsoft Teams" guy at my job.

So many of my friends on Twitter are all "catch me on Discord!" and every time my heart sinks. It's not a social media site. It's a live chat and I don't have the energy to keep up with a million different servers. I hate having notifications that I haven't read so I've turned off notifications from a lot of apps. I sometimes put my phone on do not disturb as well, just so I don't feel the urge to immediately respond to things.

Agree, I see discord as more of a skype or AIM chart if you all remember those days. It's a different beast from say a Twitter/X or Facebook.
