Aretha Franklin's Respect being used to hype Bret Hart's title match at Wrestlemania 9. I suppose you can say it's a timeless classic but I still found it odd to use a 60's song to hype this match in 1993. ZZ Top being guest hosts for RAW in 2009. Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer from the mid 80's being randomly used as theme for Wrestlemania 22 (2006).
What other examples are there?

They named a PPV 'Great Balls of Fire' to the enduring bafflement of audiences the world over.

Actually, it was Big Time (still an odd choice, but Gabriel at least had a Greatest Hits album out at the time). Even though the song was still popular at the time, WWF used Michael Jackson's Thriller (a song from 1982) as the theme song for Championship Wrestling from 1984 up through the summer of 1986. I'm currently watching the OVP podcast episodes dealing with this time period and the hosts are just sick of it by this point (1986). You'd think a company wanting to seem contemporary would have switched it out to a more recent song by that point.

Oh yeah of course Big Time. Sorry about that. They were trying to get the phrase Big time over for Wrestlemania at this point in time, also using a song with the same name by the band Soundtrack of Our Lives the year before.

I know it was five years after the Invasion storyline, but hearing "Bodies" by Drowning Pool as the theme for ECW felt a little dated in 2006.

Linda McMahon using the 1993 Euro-pop track 'Wrestelmania' as her theme at the height of the Attitude era.

"Big Time" worked great as the WM theme IMO.

ZZ Top are wrestling fans and IIRC they hosted a Texas Raw. Billy Gibbons has been in the crowd at a ton of WWE events.
I’d put Vince’s never ending fascination with Kid Rock way past that. lol
Motley Crue randomly playing a song on Raw in 1999(?) as a way to introduce Test has to be up near the top though.

Not really, Mötley was still very much in the public eye at the time, with Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee still dominating headlines and Mötley had a Greatest Hits album out with a couple new songs. It was just another stop to promote a new album they were touring on at the time, no different than them being on Leno or Letterman, except WWF was hot, so why wouldn't they go in front of that audience? Besides. I win this thread. BEHOLD. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVOOVL9RO3oSince it's WWF footage, I can't direct link it, but trust me, in WWF is out of touch with music, I just won the thread.

On top of being timeless, it did have a big resurgence in the early 90s across being licensed for a bunch of media. If anything, it was WWF being very *in* touch.

Especially since Bret was huge was on quoting the song around this time, and it had a huge resurgence in popular culture around this time. It was certainly *in*

IDK if the story is true but I remember reading Heyman pitched a System of a Down song as the WM19 theme and Vince said nobody knows who they are or something along those lines and then picked Crack Addict from WWE's most favorite band in the whole world, Limp Bizkit instead.

I can't get over that WWE had a young performer named Onicka Maraj do "I Ain't The Lady To Mess With" for Victoria, and it just... never seemed to occur to them to do anything with that song ever again once the now Nicki Minaj became one of the biggest goddamn names in music. I don't even like her, and that's bafflingly stupid.
