What are some examples of that matches on paper sound like they would be horrible but turned out great
Test vs Shane McMahon SummerSlam 1999 Considering Test was pretty green and Shane was not a fully active wrestler this match was one of the better matches at the PPV Beulah Mcgillicutty vs Bill Alfonzo ECW 1997.Beulah was a Valet and Fonzie was a referee turned manager but this match is great and Memorable Giant vs Scott Norton Fall Brawl 1997. Two guys who are hosses this is a fun hoss match Warlord vs British Bulldog Wrestlemania 7. Considering they were both power wrestlers and considering Warlord limitation they had great chemistry Nasty boys vs Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne Spring Stampede 1994. Nasty's were never the best team in terms of in ring work but this is a memorable bout L.T. Vs Bam Bam Wrestlemania 11 Kudos to Bam Bam for carrying the match Hulk vs Vince Wrestlemania 19. This had a great story behind it Test vs Brock Lesnar KOTR 2002

Ronda and Angle v Stephanie and HHH.
Ronda had never wrestled. Angle was completely washed. Stephanie had wrestled once since 2003. HHH was on 1 or 2 matches a year at this point. They took these ingredients and gave it 20 minutes on the biggest show of the year. On paper it should've been a disaster but it was great.

Undertaker and Batista winning Best Feud in the Observer Awards just for how good their matches were. They stole the show at Mania 23.

Gail Kim vs Taryn Terrell.
I know Gail was great. But Taryn was not. And they had two bangers…and Taryn was excellent in them. Some people just have chemistry…and Taryn brought great intensity to the matches. They laid it out for her strengths…sure. But it’s frigging Tiffany from ECW and she was stealing shows! Impossible. I’ve seen the matches….and it’s still impossible.

Still my all time favourite match and Wrestlemania.

The Barbarian VS Big Boss Man from Royal Rumble 1991 is a textbook example of this.

Catrina Vs Iveliesse - Ultima Lucha Tres night 2
Iveliesse who was coming off of breaking her ankle a 2nd time Vs Catrina , a woman who had not wrestled on the show at all , and maybe did very sporatic indy stuff and appeared on one of Impacts all knocksouts special prior also as a one off and there was very little expectation , hell people thought it would have been a very quick squash match and thankfully everyone was wrong.
These two put on a wild brawl that does not overstay its welcome , Iveliesse bleeds and both ladies bump their asses off with a satisfying pay off 3 seasons in the making.
And also I love mentioning it this match was supposed to be so wildly different and am still sad we never got it...it was suppose to be a match equivilent to NightCrawlers scene from the opening of the 2nd X-men movie , with Catrina teleporting all over the temple and Iveliesse running her down.

Hogan/Warrior WM 6 and Bryan/Orton/Batista WM 30. I know Bryan is mostly a good Performance but he had a 25 Minute Match before already and Orton and Batista at the time were not known for having those great Matches. Yet everyone played the part very well and we got the best Match on the Card i thought.

Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Kevin Owens.
An immediate Stunner and pin would have been completely understandable but Steve returned to the ring after 19 years and gave us a fun 14 minute match.

Ronnie Garvin vs. Greg Valentine submission match at Royal Rumble '90. Two unflashy dudes well past their primes, in a feud that had already dragged on well past its shelf life. The babyface wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire. The heel was about to be comically repackaged as Elvis impersonator No. 2. But they gave them 17 minutes and they got people into it, with a satisfying finish. It's a gold-standard blowoff match.

I know it was full of complete nonsense, but I enjoyed the f*** out of Sami Zayn/Johnny Knoxville way more than I ever could have expected

My favorite memory of a match being unexpectedly awesome as shit was Big Show versus Sheamus at Hell In A Cell 2012. Could not have been less invested in either character at the time. Big show in a title match at most in point in his career is just filler and Sheamus was coming off of an eternity-long feud with Del Rio. But the match was hard-hitting hoss action with a great, unexpected finish.

Austin vs Vince at St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
Just giving the fans what they wanted in Austin beating the crap out of Vince for 15 minutes. Then with Big Show's debut, you added a new element to the story. Just great work all around.
A few weeks later, WCW finally gives Flair the world title back and turns him heel. It's why WWF is so much farther than WCW at that point...they were giving the fans what they wanted to see.

I remember Luger and Nikita having a good match, and Michael Hayes mentioned on one of those old Legends of Wrestling shows that a lot of the boys had gathered around the monitor to watch the “train wreck,” but we’re instead surprised by “a very good match.”
