Long story short, I want to buy a Blu-Ray player. I am not terribly knowledgeable on the subject, and would love any suggestions people have. I am looking for something that doesn't necessarily need to be dirt cheap, but it does still need to be reasonably inexpensive. It doesn't have to be a feature-laden, but, I'm open to something more advanced than the bare bones if those features have substantial benefits/don't really get in the way or bump the price up a lot. Any brands that tend to be good, versus ones that are to be avoided?

I have a Sony BDP-BX370 and I'm happy with it. It was easy to set up and it's easy to use.

get a ps4/ps5/xbox one/series x.
the new gen consoles are 4k bluray players, last gen are bluray players with the added bonuses of being able to provide gaming entertainment or streaming devices for various apps.
sounds stupid as a suggestion but genuinely does make sense.

The first question you have to ask is whether or not you want to upgrade in the future to 4k as a 4k player can play them all.
The PS4/5 option is a decent shout if you are a gamer and don't mind the sound not being the best.

I came in thinking PS3, you can usually track one down for $100 or less now but you probably can’t access as many streaming apps on that. PS4/XB1 you should be able to find one under $200, or even under $150 and they still have access to all current apps

I'm not really an audiophile, exactly, and given I'm going to have it in an apartment, I also don't really want to be blaring it especially loudly, anyway, so yeah, that's probably plenty fine.

If you go the PS5 route, make sure the one you buy has a disc drive. There's "digital editions" that are a bit cheaper but lack an optical drive.
I have known people who got so happy they could find a PS5 that they didn't realize which one they were buying.

Sounds like that's an option but if it was me and I was sticking to Blu Ray (and didn't own a PS4/5).. I'd just pick up a decent make Blu Ray player as they don't cost much these days compared to a PS4/5

Been looking at 4k players, getting a 4k tv for the living room soon, and shocked at how cheap those got. Gone are the days of 400 for a laserdisc player then 100 a movie.

I have a Switch, but naturally, not everything comes out for it or is ideal for it.

I honestly can't say anything tbh, I'm a bit of an audiophile and Telephilia so I spent considerably more on my 4k player but I would never recommend others doing it hence the questions to pitch the recommendation right.

The hardware is what, 7 years old now. Although it was rumoured a few months ago, Nintendo sent demo kits to game developers of their new console and it's apparently to rival the PS5 / Xbox in graphics etc

I use to be that way. Then realized my hearing is so damaged I really can't tell the difference between say a nice record and a good MP3. I had a great surround sound system. Then moved and really couldn't use it where I live now. Ended up giving it to my girlfriend. Just like after I realized how rough my hearing is I took my stereo and put it at her place. Cause pretty uch at my place I gotta listen to music using earbubs. If I'm doing that I will stick to mp3s and store the 40 or so records I got left at her place with my record player.

That's a shame, hearing loss is hard to accept. I have tinnitus (years of gigging) but I can still differenciate between a good sound and MP3 thankfully. I'm just starting my AV journey tbf, and slowly speccing out what I want and how much I want to spend. I'm sure your girlfriend is grateful for the player etc. Have you thought of getting high end headphones where you can have the volume really low to protect your ears and the noise cancelling technology means outside interference is minimised.

Get the PS5 with the disk drive, which I'm planning to do this holiday season.
I love my PS4, but in terms of blu-ray - in addition to not handling 4K like the PS5 does, the PS4 also can't handle the most recent recordable blu-rays. Blu technology is sadly outpacing what the PS4 is capable of so go big.
