It’s that season. For a long time now I’ve had the holiday dinner with my step family, who are dyed in the wool Italians. So there is always ziti, lasagna, meatballs, or another cliche pasta dish as a side along with the traditional stuff. I’m sure in gamy households that’s just tradition, but to me it stands out. Any other examples?

I know I'll get pushback on this, but I genuinely never understood the appeal of the whole "sweet potatoes with marshmallows" casserole thing. Just yuck.

When done right, sweet yams are amazing. Screw that canned crap and get your pineapple out of there and put it on pizza where it belongs.

All right! Glad some of us don't have an STD*.
Similar to you, some years we had pepperoni bread as an appetizer. Pretty much a calzone, but served/cut like a loaf of Italian bread. But it works...in spades.
Sweet potatoes/marshmallows...I probably wouldn't be a fan as I like as much savory as possible for my suppers. I know SP's are supposed to be more healthy, but ironically they can be a bit too sweet for me.
I'm obsessed with cranberry sauce now too. At this time I need to seek out restaurants/delis that make a Thanksgiving sub, in fact.

Not an oddball dish, but was wondering if anyone here has green beans with almonds as a staple for Thanksgiving?
Growing up we always had green beans with almonds. But then one time I made Thanksgiving dinner for my family and my mom told me my brother was the only one who liked it. And he wasn’t there.

As for sides we keep it pretty traditional. Mashed potatoes, dressing, a Brussels sprout dish, Mac n cheese, cranberries and maybe green been casserole

I know I'll get pushback on this, but I genuinely never understood the appeal of the whole "sweet potatoes with marshmallows" casserole thing. Just yuck. Yams have always been terrible. Still waiting for the nation to wake up from this terrible mass delusion. Anyways, my family usually does a corn casserole with a bunch of cheese and jalapeños in it. Guess that's a little different.

Still waiting for the nation to wake up from this terrible mass delusion. I've had some wonderful yam/sweet potato recipes in my day. I remember once having them roasted Greek style with garlic and lemon and it was so delicious. I just don't understand who saw them and said "we need to make them as much like a s'more as possible!".

Any other examples? That not unusual at all, at least in my neck of the woods. I used to merchandise for grocery stores and the lasagna and giant lasagna foil pans were some of my best holiday sellers. Sure some may have been for other sides but italian dishes are still very popular for holidays around here.

Though on the oddball side, our traditional appetizer was a ritz cracker, a sliver of velveeta cheese, and a sliver of bacon. Cholesterol bomb but we cleared them e dry year. And my one grandmother used to take fat from a holiday goose and spread it on bread like butter.

One year I convinced my parents to make ribeye steaks instead of turkey, called it Steaksgiving.
It was awesome and they never did it again.

Not a full-on dish but a condiment: since the early 2000s or so my family's always had a spicy bbq sauce that is so good to dip white meat in.
