There was a magical time back in like 90 or 91 where it seemed like EVERYbody I saw in my neighborhood was wearing some bootleg Simpsons T shirts I had three bootleg Simpsons tees when I was nine years old. I did not know what The Simpsons was for another year.

I remember those awful 90’s bootleg shirts of a red eyed Bart smoking a massive joint. It’s like, he’s ten. Why did you draw that and why would you wear it?

This was back during the Tracy Ullman era Possibly, though I'm in the UK so can only speak from that perspective. "Do the Bartman" hit #1 in the charts, which saw the bootleg market absolutely explode. I was vaguely aware of the song but never realised it was connected to a show until my parents got satellite TV in late-'91/early-'92.

yeah, this'll help I'm sure. I’m old enough to remember the rampant bootleg Bart tshirts of the early 90’s so this is…*chefs kiss* …the fact he’s doing it because of - and this cannot be emphasized strongly enough - a bullshit 4Chan based rumor is just the icing on the delicious cake for me. Whatever happened to peeing Calvin?

Why would he be selling bootleg merch when his legit merch is super popular? Why did Warrior publish a whacked out comic even WWE was already paying him through the nose? Grifters gonna grift.

Whatever happened to peeing Calvin? The creator must hate that decal. As a kid I avoided reading Calvin and herold because of it. When I received the book of strips as a gift,I was surprised that it was nothing like the decal and loved it Bill Watterson has anyways been adamant about not licensing his work for any official merch. He hates that image but also kind of shrugs that they’d isn’t a whole lot he can do about it. His general take on it is just bewilderment that it was as popular as it was. Personally, I hope these accusations are not true. But let’s be honest, from a carnie like Danhausen it wouldn’t be remotely surprising. And his response has, IMO, been cagey. All he had to do is say “I didn’t do it,” the statements he has made feel like he wants to have deniability either way. And, again, from a carnie like him that’s totally in character.

I could be misremembering, but I think the shirts came out before they even had a regular TV series. This was back during the Tracy Ullman era I remember the shirts being popular when they had their own show. But the show was on Fox,which was brand new. A lot of cable companies didn't carry Fox yet, so it wasn't available in many homes. The buzz about the show really helped the fledgling network get on more cable companies lineup. I was in college when Simpsons was emerging and I never seen it because it wasn't on our cable. There was a college bar that was able to show it, because they had an antenna I believe, so they played it on Sunday night when it was on their tv, and the place was packed. You couldn't even hear the show because of all of the people.

Remember when there was a load of bootleg shirts where Bart had a light blue shirt? For whatever reason, the light blue shirt has always been his official comic design. I had not previously heard of it being associated with bootlegs, so I'm curious if that's just a matter of which images were easier to work with at the time.

I remember all the bootleg Beavis and Butthead merch that still had their shirts saying Skull and Death Rock. I don’t think they’re bootlegs though, are they? I think they don’t have the rights or license or whatever to have Metallica and AC/DC on the shirts when it’s not on TV. In fact, I’m pretty sure the official B&B comic had Skull and Death Rock shirts.

Hmm, I wonder if the Bart Simpson shirt I got as a kid was one of those bootleg shirts, don't recall what it looked like, but being that I got it from a cousin from NYC, it wouldnt surprise me.

I had not previously heard of it being associated with bootlegs, so I'm curious if that's just a matter of which images were easier to work with at the time. It's from the concept art of the show. Originally he was going to have a Blue Shirt, they changed it to red late in development. a lot of official early merch has him in a blue shirt. Including The Arcade game... which also has a concept art only gag of Marge being one of Matt's life in hell rabbits in disguise.
