Since the season kicks off tomorrow. This movie like of confounds me. I feel like there was a kernel of a halfway decent idea for a zany holiday comedy in there somewhere; the couple who normally throws lavish holiday celebrations decides to go on a vacation instead because their daughter will be away-but they are worried about how their neighbors will take the news and try to be sneaky about it, resulting in hijinks. The neighbors find out and are insulted by the dishonesty, but when the daughter will be home, they have to turn to their neighbors to help throw together the traditional festivities at the last minute. The neighbors forgive them and try to lend a hand, resulting in further hijinks. I could have envisioned gags like having to resort to Chanukah decorations because the Christmas decorations were all sold out, having to order Chinese because there are no holiday turkeys left, etc.
But somewhere it got lost in translation. I’m talking city of Atlantis level lost. The end result feels like something Russo would write.

Yeah, on paper it sounds like a really workable idea but somewhere along the way they couldn't figure out exactly what they wanted the movie to be

I think it's one of the lousier modern-day Christmas movies. The whole plot is just kind of cruel, that the main family is basically bullied and shunned into continuing to celebrate the holiday.
It reminds me of that terrible "Ms. Wakefield" episode of King of the Hill, where the actions of everyone outside of the family are rude and mean-spirited, yet we're somehow supposed to side with them over the totally reasonable requests of the family.

Best letterbox review I've seen:
"I'd rather have Christmas with the sh*ts."

The scene where he announces they won’t be having a party this year, he’s super dickish about it.

Is this the movie where everybody is an asshole but it's played as if it's a wholesome family holiday movie?
actually... that sounds like one of the more realistic movies about a family holiday lol

Is the book anything like the movie (I also find it odd that John Grisham, king of legal thrillers, wrote this one)?

This is Girlfriend Outta Nowhere's favorite Christmas movie.
As a Jewish kid who lived in a neighborhood with exactly 1 other Jewish neighbor in the entire 50 house block, it is also my favorite Christmas movie.
If they just leaned a little harder into how f***ing absurdly dark this Christmas-loving dystopia is, it'd be an all time classic.
They made the front page of the newspaper, because they were sad their dumbass daughter was going to be away for Christmas!

They should do a crossover movie with Jason Statham, "Christmas On Crank."

They should do a crossover movie with Jason Statham, "Christmas On Crank." Co-Starring Scottish comedy legends (and noted swingers), the Krankies.

There's an idea in there somewhere, but the execution and the angle they approached it from condemned this to be absolute trash.

It probably didn't help that Tim Allen is a terrible comedian.

This could have been a lot better if Tim and Jamie were playing Jason Nesmith (from Galaxy Quest) and Laurie Strode (from Halloween) respectively (just make up some story about them hooking up somehow) and put it in the continuity of those films.
