Ah. I will say I do despise the recent trend of artists selling their catalogues to these big companies. Those companies just wanna use it so they can sue current artists for BS reasons. Go Hall! By and large, artists don't own their own music. The only two bands I know of off the top of my head who are Aerosmith, at least their 70's stuff and Mötley Crüe. Aerosmith because their 70's managers took a Hail Mary and asked for the rights back after 20 years, reasoning it was currently 1974, so by 94 Aerosmith would be long gone, the managers would be retired, the record guy would be retired and no one would give a shit. The record company said, "You're right. That makes complete sense" So Aerosmith was the first band to ever own their masters. Now, Aerosmith has turned around and sold all those. Mötley got their masters back by Nikki Sixx being such a pain in the ass to the record, up to and including calling the head of Electra Records a c*** in the press, that Electra basically gave them their catalogue back just to get rid of them. Taylor Swift is busy George Lucasing herself through her old albums, but that's not the same thing and just a cash grab to get her fans to buy shit they already bought.

they have allegedly hated each other forever... It happens, like The Kinks having the success that they did all while Ray and Dave Davies had issues, and Dave getting f***ed up royally by the drummer during a concert once and needing 16 stitches. People who work together professionally might have chemistry there that doesn't translate into friendship, or which puts pressure on the personal side of the relationship. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have despised each other for decades but will work together for a Stones tour

I think McCartney finally got the Beatles rights back at some point.

Paul gets back everything he wrote in 2026. Yoko cut a deal with Sony and Paul gets it all in 2050, 70 years after Lennon's death.

Bit sad finding that out.

Taylor Swift is busy George Lucasing herself through her old albums, but that's not the same thing and just a cash grab to get her fans to buy shit they already bought. You've said this a few times and it's so massively wrong. Those entire "Taylor's Version" albums are remade from scratch with enough new context and elements to rightfully constitute being the massive music events that they are. They've reinvented the way artists can share their catalog and make people excited about revisiting earlier work. They also allow Taylor the chance to have complete control to present the songs how she wanted. This is SOOOOOOO different than George Lucas continuously f***ing with things people loved without giving them access to earlier ones and just throwing on more quickly-outdated tech at it for tech's sake. I know it was fun to hate on Taylor Swift years ago for being a woman expressing her pain from relationships in song form, but it's 2023 now and she's done a tremendous amount of good for the music industry and audiences.

Completely get it if Oates is trying to sell his share of their catalogue out from under Hall, leaving him minority partner in works he was the lead creator on. This is going to get ugly with Oates contributions being ripped apart in court.
Taylor Swift isn't George Lucasing her works, the music business tried to shaft her and rob her of her rights the way it has so many young artists and she found a way to push back and produce her music, her way. She should be lauded for not sitting there and taking it, not becoming yet another name on the list of those whose creative peak is owned by people who contributed nothing.

Speaking of these situations, the other night The Brian Jonestown Massacre ended up in an all out brawl on stage. Wait. Is it 2003?

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have despised each other for decades but will work together for a Stones tour Aw no, I'm not far from where they grew up, only the other week I was at the station with a plaque on the spot they met, a statue of them outside. Bit sad finding that out. I know there was some bad blood when Mick made a solo album which Keith didn't want him to do, though Bill Wyman already had solo albums and Keith said screw it and did his own solo stuff. I never heard that they despised each other and they have mellowed I'm sure.
