Trying to figure out the best match he had not involving Ted. I think his IC title match with HBK is supposed to be good, anything else?

Bret/Virgil from Superstars November 1992. Virgil was challenging Bret for the title…and lost.

Definitely the match with Bret on Superstars in late 1992.

Bret Hart got a good match out of a bad worker!? Color me shocked! It's kind of funny: he obviously could carry people like Virgil sometimes, but I always found it interesting that his matches with Diesel were as good as they were. Nash was much better than Virgil, but still could be pretty limited. Bret made good use of his strengths, and frankly, their matches were better than a lot of the ones he had with stronger workers like Shawn. Go figure.

When Yokozuna flattened him. LOL! That’s a good one especially when he did his post match promo mispronouncing Yokos name and calling him a menace or something like that because of what he did to him despite the fact that all Yoko did for the most part I guess was beat him up for the win.

Such disrespect to his matches against Bastion Booger in here. Especially since he beat Bastion in his first match (on a side note, you know that it does not look good when you lose your first match on TV.)

He had a half way decent match with Macho in like 1988 or so. It was on the Best of the WWF High Flyers VHS.

The 94 rumble match.
Came in, got thrown out by Diesel. Perfect amount of Virgil action.

I think it's because in the Diesel match, Bret was 100% calling the whole thing and Diesel just had to be a dance partner.
Sometimes when you get guys who are both fantastic workers you get amazing music - like Flair and Steamboat.
Sometimes you get players who are stepping all over each other, which is how I see Bret/Shawn

Maybe so, though I think it's also a case where Bret built some of his matches like a puzzle, like "how does Bret 'solve' the issue of fighting a guy so much bigger than him?', playing off the dynamic. He did it with Yokozuna and some other big men, too, obviously, but Diesel and Yoko had very different skill sets and Bret planned accordingly with spots that made use of it. It's as you say, I doubt Shawn was as apt to listen to Bret, and vice versa, though they did at least usually cooperate with each other long enough to have good matches, just not as good as they maybe ought to have been.
