E3 Is Dead for Good ign.com/articles/e3-is-dead-for-goodE3 officially dead. This is not surprising in the least, but still sad. I remember E3 being one of the biggest, most enjoyable weeks for gaming geeks like myself. I’d watch as much as I could, I’d schedule around presentations, spend hours looking up “hands on” info and any other info I could get. Good times

Just room for something better to pop up as I see it.

As soon as companies realised they didn't have to spend millions of dollars on a booth but just do a streaming thing and get as much, if not more engagement? E3 was as good as dead.

Nintendo got the ball rolling once they realized they can do it themselves online and lose none of the audience. It does feel like a loss of something iconic on one hand, but it really was a dates concept.

And its original purpose as an industry fair is basically dead with the current landscape so there's really not much to it. Either adapt like Gamescon did with the keynotes or something that makes it must see. Just trailers for what's coming from new companies is dead with the digital events becoming a thing and demos aren't as much as a draw, what with so many quality/hyped games that no one has much time (much less money) to waste going there just to play demos. Not to mention costs for the companies.

Everyone doing directs where companies could pre-record their content and not do it live was bad enough, COVID was the dagger and it just never recovered. I understand why it died but it still sucks to see. I miss getting friends together and dunking on the live press conferences.
I hope E3 is in heaven now playing RIIIIIDGE RACEERRRRR on the PSP.

E3 should've died long before it did really. It served no purpose for a long, long time, then you have the massive security nightmare of I think it was the 2019 one to boot.

COVID felt like it was the final nail in the coffin for E3. But it was on death's door for almost a decade before that. Between all the major console makers doing their own things around the same time, Geoff Keighly taking the reins as "industry shill for the media" for his "totally not E3 show" and The Game Ads-Posing-As-Awards, other major publishers bypassing E3 for their own shows like QuakeCon and BlizzCon, and fan-oriented cons like PAX, E3 feels obsolete. And it's not like it's needed outside of North America because Europe has GamesCom and Japan has Tokyo Game Show.

I've been thinking all day about the last E3 I really remember and I think it was the one when Microsoft introduced the Kinect? Where they had all these elephants and people dressed in white and it felt like a cross between Michael Jackson's funeral and a cult initiation.
Did I dream this up? Am I conflating different events? Was this really how middling electronics were introduced to the public?

Hasn't it been functionally dead for years now? Can't say it's surprising, especially as several other events that essentially serve the same purpose but are cheaper and more effective at reaching specific audiences companies are after have been popping up for at least five years or so, if not a decade.
It does suck to lose the "basically a nerd con but bigger" feel of it, though. I know E3 was actually a corporate event, but you gotta hand it to them, they did a great job of not making it feel like one, whereas I feel like modern replacements are, for the most part, more sanitized. I will also miss the absurdly extravagant theatrics in a desperate attempt by various corporations to outdo one-another as they competed for our attention (all while telling us how expensive video games are to make and how they're so hard-up for cash).

I can't wait for Nintendo to announce that they're working with Phillips.

They were doomed the moment major companies realised they don't have to pay them to compete with one another for eyeballs and media attention when a well made presentation event of their own can be done cheaper online, with less chance of their rivals kneecapping them publicly with presentations held later in the day. '$299' and Sony's game sharing demo springs to mind.

Not much point to it anymore thanks to the Game Awards and all of the various nerd-cons you can attend now for basically any niche you want.
Let’s play the old song one last time:
