Some notable highlights from two March 1984 episodes:
- Terry Taylor and Butch Reed with music video promos set to J Geils Band’s Freeze Frame and Rapper’s Delight by Sugar Hill Gang (these songs were in the wrong order). Tons of Taylor pinup bikini posing and Reed lacing up boots. Reed cuts a backstage promo where the sound is so garbled, all I hear is “Bgrufrurapgophoo Title, sucka!”
They cut back to Bill Watts interviewing Reed. Jim Cornette comes out to yell at Watts, and Watts calls him a sissy. The Midnight Express come out to beat up Watts, and Butch who I’m pretty sure is a face here, just walks away. Like “this isn’t my problem.” He walks off in the opposite direction of the babyfaces that actually tried to save Bill. I’m guessing Watts musta said something really, really bad to Butch, because what a hero.
- Cornette is on commentary with Boyd Pierce as Lanny Poffo and Mr. Wrestling II have a match and Jim says at one point “don’t you ever take a breath?” Then he goes on a rant about how great Eaton and Condrey are without taking any breaths.
- Jim Duggan saves Terry Taylor from being murdered Swerve Strickland style by the russians, acting more basic- all American than the Uncle Sam type character he was in WWE. The Russians win a squash and Boyd is ready to f***ing fight Cornette at this point.
- Duggan beats Masao Ito with a flying tackle that Jim Ross calls a “spear”. The Russians run back out to murder Duggan and Ito helps, as Jim Ross repeatedly calls him “The Japanese” and Boyd constantly pronounces his name “Doogan” before Magnum TA and Rock and Roll Express make the save.
- Past highlights of Corny getting shoved into a birthday cake by Rock’n Roll and Watts laughing at him on commentary. Cornette walks up to Ross’s microphone and his one quote is “EEURRGH!” Bill and Jim argue about lawsuits with Watts repeatedly implying Jim is gay, and Jim goes *airborne* after a pretty mild Watts slap. I’m pretty sure I heard the “Aaaahoohoohooey” Goofy Scream when his hand hit his face.
- Bill Watts cuts a promo about being a man, dressed *exactly* like John Wayne in 1972’s “The Cowboys” after Jim made multiple Wayne jokes to him. Watts goes to Junkyard Dog’s ranch to ask JYD for help, and Dog instead suggests his buddy- the masked Stagger Lee. We get some footage of Stagger destroying Ted Dibiase (who already has his classic laugh), and boy does his offense and running powerslam look awfully familiar.
- Hype video of Bill Watts fighting Terry Funk and other folks, and Bill pulls out a frilly dress and a *diaper* and threatens to make Jim wear them. I know about humiliation stips, but Bill seems weirdly fixated here.
- So I figure this is Butch’s official turn as he tries to jump Taylor with the coal miner’s glove and he gets chucked out the tournament. Our standby match is Ito vs. Larry Santana and finally Ross seems to have actually learned the dude’s name. We close with more footage of Watts looking like someone’s dad doing cosplay and falling on folks.
This is like a mix of AEW Rampage with WCW Pro style weirdness and I’m hooked
