There’s only two people who have wrestled for AEW in the last six months with a noted reputation of being a “lady stealer”. Neither are Chris Jericho, and Edge is happily married by all accounts.

Okay so just to push back against this one bit here; not only has Jericho boosted some actually pretty good things and publicly stood up against twitter transphobes for Nyla Rose, but also this is the kind of thing you can only say not knowing what a f***ing nightmare shark tank of purity testing progressive twitter can be. The infighting gets nastier than anything that gets directed at white supremacist accounts half the time. And Jericho donates to wrestlers in need continuously, which have far exceeded any questionable donations he's made in the past. A lot of wrestlers have beliefs far worse than Jericho's and don't get grief, AJ Styles springs to mind, people tend to rag on Jericho more because he's grating on social media and wears out his welcome on TV. The Jericho cycle will reset once he's off TV for a bit and people have time to miss him. Wait, what did AJ do?

He's never outright said anything publicly but he's said to privately be very homophobic. He used the F slur in a promo as recently as about 10 years ago. There was also the infamous "The GAY community?" soundbite, though in all fairness I think he was just really caught off guard by the question he was asked and it was a pretty loaded question to begin with. Also according to Randy Orton the "flat earther" thing is closer to the truth than you'd think.

And we all know that Jericho wouldn't be getting this level of abuse if he signal-boosted the 'correct progressive causes.' OK I don't agree with that, because one of the closest wrestlers to me in terms of progressive causes was David Starr

Plus there's his appearance on a virulently homophobic YouTube 'Comedian's' show while under WWE contract. You don't go on Steven Crowder's show without knowing exactly who and what he is and being just fine with that, and if he was somehow tricked into a guest spot, he would have said so. AJ doesn't swear, blaspheme, but sure had no issues throwing the homophobic slurs around during his 'great' post TNA run. He had the freedom to be the character he wanted to be and what he chose to do with that tells me all I really need to know.

I'm surprised WWE didn't tell him no.

Aren't these people allowed to privately think whatever they want? They can talk to whoever they want, be friends with whoever they want (even people with, gasp, beliefs you may find slightly objectionable) and so forth.
The problem is when someone comes out and publicly slams a group of people or whatnot and it adds legitimacy to people hating on that group.
If someone is largely keeping their thoughts to themselves on social media, shouldn't we like, not dig around mining in their past to try and suss out if the person is "acceptable" or not?
At that point you're bordering on sounding pretty intolerant yourself are you not?

Maybe it's just me, but I'll happily be intolerant of people who are racist, homophobic, transphobic, etc. I'm sure many don't want to buy a t-shirt or emotionally invest in someone who thinks they're worth less just because of who they are. So yeah, keep your opinions to yourself. But if you're famous, don't be surprised if if people are intolerant of your intolerance.

Like, you can’t expect to put an image out or go with a viewpoint and have people, especially those affected, go “Yeah, that’s fine, I’ll keep giving you money because you’re good at what you do”. Especially when you work for a company with a global image like WWE or AEW. It isn’t how things work.

Tolerating bigotry is a great way to let that shit fester and get worse. Nobody is breaking into anyone's home to carve out the part of their brain making The Bad Thoughts but AJ Styles threw around slurs at real actual live wrestling shows I don't think it should be a surprise that people wouldn't want to be supportive of him in light of that and to call that intolerant as if that's hypocrisy is a hell of a position to take.

People are allowed to believe what they want. Other people are also allowed to criticize or disassociate from people with said beliefs. Also "keeping your beliefs to yourself on social media" is a hell of a paradox considering as public figures, someone's social media can reach thousands if not millions of people. Not saying that digging around someone's social media to look for a gotcha from 10 years ago isn't scumbag behavior in its own right, especially when the person has demonstrably grown since then. But if someone with bigoted beliefs is spewing them into Zuckerberg's or Musk's sewers, others are going to notice the stink.
And "you're being pretty intolerant of intolerance!" isn't the checkmate you think it is.

Anyways, sure you can be friends with people who have beliefs you don't agree with. Or hell, like the subject of this very thread, you can be married to said person who only ever thinks of these things in the most disturbing way possible. But that just means you don't really stand for them yourself in any meaningful way.

The reason I brought up AJ is because he hasn't been cancelled over politics, nor has Hunter, nor has Brock and nor has Jericho. People who are fans of wrestling long ago learned to hold their nose when it comes to the flawed aspects of the wrestlers they are fans of, I don't like Bret Hart's womanising or his endorsement of an NFT scam a few years ago, for example, and he should be criticised for that when the topic comes up. The criticism Jericho attracts in general 99% of the time has nothing to do with any politics he holds, it's because people are tired of his TV persona and because of his public behaviour on social media, the thin skinned drunkle who wants to be a rock star act has stopped being charming and makes people more inclined to believe negative stories.

But that just means you don't really stand for them yourself in any meaningful way. My mother was deeply homophobic. Deeply. Mainly because of her upbringing and her culture. I realized the concept of homosexuality in kindergarten because of a friend who chased boys instead of girls; It was never an issue for me. In the latter part of our lives, my mother constantly talked down, insulted and degraded homosexuality. I’m not gay but I sympathize a lot. I never insulted her back. I held firm in my beliefs. I could have walked away due to her nature - I did not. I took care of her till the day she died. I take offense to that last statement of yours. Think you’re wrong. Think the grander point the poster who started this was trying to make, is that hate begets hate. Completely people’s prerogative to do what they want, ignore, etc though …this is also very far from the topic of the original thread, so I apologize.

To me, words are words. That’s just whatever. If someone is actively campaigning against a group “**** should be allowed to breathe” or “World would be a better place without Jews” that’s a whole different story. Then I have issues, but AJ dropping some F bombs or even the interview with a 21 year old Brock saying he doesn’t like gays I can deal with. And I say that as someone who keeps their sexuality under wraps in my real life. There are way bigger things to concern myself with then closed minded people, it’s the openly hostile and aggressive ones that concern me.

You don't get to choose your family. Most of the time you don't get to choose who you work with either. Odds are you'll get stuck with someone who's opinions/beliefs are opposite to yours. That's a complicated situation that you have to find a way to navigate through, whether it's cutting people out or trying to ignore the bad and focus on the good. There's not a right answer or a one size fits all answer either.
That's a world away from pro wrestling. Me not buying an AJ Styles shirt or supporting him because I oppose his alleged homophobia is completely uncomplicated. I don't have to find a way to work with him or figure out family holidays. It's easy. The two situations are completely different.
Everyone can choose for themselves whether they want to support athletes and celebrities that they morally disagree with. I personally couldn't support someone like that if I knew about it but YMMV. Ultimately, pro wrestling is a fun escape for me. I don't want to think that the fun people doing my fun fake sport hate sections of the audience just for being who they are.
And I think this is getting dangerously off topic now so I'm just going to shut up.
