I do this a alot, especially since I've primarily switched to playing games on PC. Usually stuff thats on sale, or if happen to catch a video of someone playing something and it catches my eye. recently I saw an episode of Dankpods where the host was talking about the Steam Deck and he was playing Snakeybus which came out in 2019.
It looked fun, and was only 5 bucks so I got it. It really is a fun little time waster that's a mix between Snake and Crazy Taxi so I'm happy I discovered it. There are plenty of other games I've discovered like that.
Anyone else like to discover games like this way after they've came out?

During the Holiday Switch Sale I bought Nier Automata which released 7 years ago, Warframe that originally released 10 years ago, and Star Ocean: First Departure R, a 2007 remake of a game that originally came out in 1996, none of which I'd ever played before.

I know I got on the Metal Gear Solid train super late in like 2012. I could not get into the first game but then ended up liking the Gamecube port in Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes. Did the rest off the series after that.

That’s practically the only way I play games. I did preorder Jedi Survivor and will also do so for the 2nd part of the FF7 remake.

I got into final fantasy with the remake of FF7. I owned the original but it never clicked, 25 years later is better than now or never I suppose.
I picked up Wolfenstein in the summer in the sale and finally got into the series.

I do this all the time as well. I think over half of the games I have on my Switch are ports of older games I never played.
New new games are getting ridiculously expensive so unless I know with certainty it's going to be my type of game, I'm happy to wait a few years to try something out. They're cheaper and you usually get any upgrades and expansion packs included.

I got my PS4 in late 2019, so pretty much every big PS4 game was one being played years after its original release.

I didn't buy the first Red Dead Redemption until 2013 because I hadn't felt like buying a PS3 until near the end of 2012.
Also, I bought Skyrim for PS3 in 2012.

New games are so expensive these days that waiting them out's typically the only way. If you like that last one, its sequel Second Story R was recently rereleased. I'm waiting for it to eventually pop up in the sales, full price is a little steep for a remake, even for a game I adored back in the day.

Dipping my toes on the Yakuza series, starting with 7. Turns out, my slightly potato-y laptop can handle 7 at the most minimum, so should stand to reason that the games before it should work.

New games are so expensive these days that waiting them out's typically the only way. That's actually not really true, games are slightly cheaper now then they were 20 years ago. GameCube games were $50 USD when the system launched in 2001, and adjusted for inflation that's $89 now. That being said, I almost never buy games at launch. Nintendo games sometimes, just because you know you're not gonna see any drastic sales anytime soon but most games I wait. Resident Evil 2 and 3 I waited a year or so and got them for like $20 each, AC Odyseey and Valhalla I waited a year or two and got each for under $30 with some or all of the DLC for example. EDIT: Sidenote, I'm kinda surprised Nintendo hasn't done any Nintendo Select line for the Switch. That's the first system to not receive one I believe

The only game I bought when it was new in the past several years was Baldur's Gate 3 because I wanted to encourage games being released in a complete state with no micro transactions, which used to be standard but is now apparently impossible.
Also, I played wow from vanilla to cataclysm and that ate up too much time so my backlog is damned massive. This is further exacerbated by the fact that rpgs are my favourite genre and they are almost as a rule really freaking long.

I'm playing through the Star Ocean 2 (re)remake right now, and it's pretty much as good the original and PSP versions with some quality life of improvements thrown in like fast travel and the un-locakable ability to instantly defeat lower level monsters on the map.

I saw they had that, figured I'd probably check it out once I finish the first one. And I'm also one who typically waits for sales before buying digital games. The only game I bought when it was new in the past several years was Baldur's Gate 3 because I wanted to encourage games being released in a complete state with no micro transactions, which used to be standard but is now apparently impossible. I did the same thing for the same reasons when Hades first dropped.

Sweet Jesus I love that game, it’s still one of my regular go tos. Got time to kill? Do a run on Hades

My Steam games list (especially since I got an OLED Steam Deck and decided to load up with games for it during the Winter Sale) is loaded with games I missed the boat on by at least a couple years, plenty with a longer gap of time than that.
I'm just now giving FF7 Remake a go. I'm digging it, but can see why people that just wanted it to be a tried-and-true FF7 remake didn't dig it so much.
I remember being a Dreamcast fighting game dork, even owned Project Justice and SFIII 3rd Strike (two of the most uncommon games on the console), along with SF Alpha III, Capcom vs. SNK, Marvel vs. Capcom 1 and 2, etc. But I never did give "Garou; Mark of the Wolves" a go. I remember hearing a ton of people say it was just "meh" in a loaded fighting game crowd on the console. Just last year I decided to give it a go and HOLY SHIT is it fantastic. It has a legit claim as SNK's "3rd Strike" with how solid it plays and how much style it has. I had opportunities to get it dirt cheap back when I still had my Dreamcast hooked in on a normal basis (until about late 2002/early 2003 when I got my PS2), and passed it up repeatedly. I deeply regret not finding out about it sooner.
I remember getting into Terraria super-late due to just being unattracted to Minecraft clones at the time. I didn't hate Minecraft but didn't love it either, so anything that was an -alike of it just instantly didn't interest me. But I've put SOOOOOO many hours into that game. I love it.

This is not recent but I didn't actually play the mass effect trilogy until a few months after the 3rd one came out.
