I knew I was old when 3 weeks ago was in a local grocery store in line to check out. Song from my senior year playin over the speakers and i look all three of us in line are softly singing along and all of us had grey hair and appeared to be at least 45 if not older.
But then I get stuff like a guy telling me Saturday "No f***ing way you are almost 50. My dad is that old,you are 34." thanked him and gave him a dvd for free.

Started Working in Sheerness Docks in the UK 20 Years ago.. At the time I thought it would just be a temporary thing.. 20 Years later I'm still there. Not with the same company but I'm still there. I'm back in the same building I was working in 20 years ago but for a different company too. Only less picturesque. They still haven't fixed the aircon in all that time. Both jobs were only for a few months to start with. Realising that I've spent longer in that building than I did at secondary school was depressing. One more year at it overtakes my entire schooling. Thank f*** for wfh.

Okay, I have said it before and I will say it again. I am usually unaffected by these types of topics because I am well aware of how much time has passed. I usually have a good perception of time, so I am aware that I graduated high school back in 2004. I have memory of how my life was at that point.
That isn't to say that I don't have my moments of feeling a certain way. Since going back to school in the fall of 2022, I realized that some of my classmates were either infants or toddlers when I graduated high school, or not born yet. Since I am trying to finish up an AA and a couple of certificates in some field, even when I was in college back in the 2000s, I recall that there were students who were decades older than me. That's not a bad thing. However, I also know that it is not a good idea to try talking to female students at this point in my life because they are too young for me.

2004 was when the ending to WrestleMania XX was a GOOD thing. Was probably my favourite end to a wrestling show ever. Looking back now not so much. It is one of the most fantastic endings to a wrestling show of all time... that has been horribly tainted due to what happens next. Hell even if Benoit didn't do what he did it'd still be at least somewhat tainted by Eddie's death... but still at least salvageable... but... yeah.

In January 2004 I was in my first year of high school. I'm 32 now.
I met 3 of my closest friends in high school, it's crazy to think I've known them for 20 years.
So many great games came out in 2004 too, GTA San Andreas, The Sims 2 and Pokemon Colosseum to name a few.
Jude Bellingham, who is one of the best football players in the world, would have been a 7 month old baby.
I think it hurts me more that 2014 was 10 years ago though, that was one of the best years of my life and still feels so recent.

January 2004:
I was 12 years old with 13 looming. 7th grade was halfway through and there was a lot of change on its way in what was an odd transitional phase from childhood to teenager for me.
I was not watching wrestling at the time. I had stopped midway through 2003 because Raw was brutal and Smackdown was eh. I thought I outgrew the fandom until I returned at the end of 2004.
I wasn't posting here yet, that was still 15 months away.
I lived in my original neighborhood still and would do so another 6 years. I've now been gone 14 years this Summer from there.
The St. Louis Rams had won the NFC West and immediately loses the Divisional Round to the Carolina Panthers who are en route to a Super Bowl. Say that sentence nowadays.
The Lakers dynasty of the early 2000s was near its end. Shaq, Kobe, Karl Malone and Gary Payton weren't the dream team I hoped for.
The Maryland Terrapins my college team and school I eventually attended was in the ACC just having capped off a Gator Bowl win on New Years Day over West Virginia, who was in the Big East. The Mens Basketball team won its final ACC Championship and most recent conference championship to date over Duke and made a kid thats 23 now cry in the crowd.
I'm not sure what show I was watching, that may have been the era where television went to crap for me.
Movie wise, Spider-Man 2 came out and was my favorite Super Hero movie of all-time and the best film in my opinion of 2004. It was considered so good that it got Oscar buzz that year.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas came out and set a new standard for gaming to me as a 13 year old that Fall. I played the other two games again leading up and remember immediately sitting down after school to play when Mom had gotten it. Don't judge, they didn't quite get it haha.
A lot more simpler of an era. I went to school, enjoyed long bus rides to an from, got home and once Spring hit we rotated between football, basketball and baseball in my old neighborhood after school, or even a 1 v 1 video game meet. Every day felt like a journey. Childhood to me was like those old kid shows from the 80s and 90s.
I don't recognize today's world, and sometimes feel like I was misplaced in another timeline of a life I remember but one now I don't recognize.
The world still had its hostilities. I grew up in a tough neighborhood

Shit like this is why I've had a complex about my age since I was in my 20s.
It has not gotten any better...

So yeah, I don't have brilliant memories of it.

I can tell when it's going to rain, because of arthritis in my knees. And, my back is screaming at me.
I'll be 37, this year!

This is not 2004, but several years ago I was explaining something to one of our summer student workers. When I finished I said "and now you know, and knowing is half the battle". She stared at me blankly. "GI Joe?" "Did you just age yourself 10 years?"

I first met the woman who would later become my wife in 2004. We had a kid and were married the following year, so yeah, that's how I realise what was happening 20 years ago.
Even now we both can't believe the amount of time we've tolerated each other 😄

She stared at me blankly. "GI Joe?" "Did you just age yourself 10 years?" I didn’t want to start a whole new thread about it, but since you gave a similar example… One thing that makes me feel a million years old is YouTubers younger than me talking about, “the early days of the Internet.” I remember being in junior high school and earlier. Teachers would reminisce then about, “the early days of the Internet” when they used it in the 1980s at universities before it was more broadly used by the general public. And believe it or not those weren’t the true early days of the Internet either. So on the video I’m watching now the guy mentions, “the early days of the Internet” and when do you think he’s talking about? The early 1990s? The late 1990s? Maybe at least 2006 when YouTube was still new. Try 2012!
