I forgot that VHS tapes were still a thing in 2004. Yeah that really took me by surprise. I forgot just how staggering and swift the decline was. After I bought the first X-Box shortly after it came out in 2001 I quickly shifted gears to DVD collecting. But VHS was still everywhere for a while after that.

“Come and see The Killers live as they play Hot Fuss on their 20th anniversary tour!”
That made me old when I saw that.
Other albums that are 20 years old now:
Green Day - American Idiot MCR - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge Mastodon - Leviathan Slipknot - Vol 3: Subliminal Verses Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache Franz Ferdinand - S/T Scissor Sisters - S/T Kanye West - College Dropout
To name a few.
Saw & Shaun of The Dead came out 20 years ago this year too.

VHS tapes from 2004-06 go for a decent amount of money on the collector's market due to the fact they were pressed in limited qualities (and if you can get your hands on the Cars VHS from 2007, you're really lucky).

Yep Cars and History of violence are two harder to find VHS releases. Got History from a local thrift cheap.
I realize 2004 was 20 years ago cause my youngest is less than 3 week from turning 20.

This really from 2004?
I graduated high school that year, and from what I recall Blockbuster was already nothing but DVDs at that point. Think my family had gotten rid of our VCRs at least a couple years prior.

2004 was a rotten year for me that redeemed itself when the Red Sox won the World Series. Oh, and Green Day's "American Idiot".

VHS stuck around a long time because so many people had full collections of VHS. I remember one year my older sister was going to buy us a dvd player and my mother convinced her to get a VHS player instead because we owned a bunch of VHS and didn't own any DVDs. I imagine this was hardly unique. That would have been the end of the 90s or the beginning of the 00s.
Edited to add: Did anyone else find it really weird when they would advertise DVDs on VHS? They'd talk about how much clearer the picture was than what you were actively watching, they'd talk about how you could hear a pin drop because of the audio quality and demonstrate on the VHS. It always just struck me as silly.

Think my family had gotten rid of our VCRs at least a couple years prior. Yeah, Blockbuster kept VHS until 2006, and then when they decided to drop the format Hollywood Video doubled down by rebranding as a full-on movie archive converging every four stores into one with an emphasis on (paraphrase) "that movie you're looking for, we're absolute sure we have it." Sort of a for-profit library with the immersive movie rental experience. It's a move that probably could have worked had they tried it sooner, but they dropped their VHS by 2008 and then closed entirely in 2010.

Also, if you can find a VCR from 2005 or so, they really mastered the technology before the end.

2004 was when I dropped out of High School.
Day of Reckoning came out in 2004.
2004 was the return of "Deadman" Undertaker.
I was 18 years old in 2004.
Now I'm 2 years away from being 40.
