Mark Madden is the absolute pits. He adds nothing of value ever. Not in analysis, play-by-play, insight, storytelling, humor, nothing. Yet he had to talk. A lot. At his best he was a 3rd rate heel Attitude Era Jerry Lawler wannabe. At his worst, which was most of the time, he dragged a terrible show to even lower depths. I’ve always been fairly indifferent to most announcers. The guys from the territory days were just part of the vibe of that territory, regardless of how good or bad they were. Even David Crockett was tolerable within the confines of JCP. Then I heard Mark Madden. The first and, as far as I can recall, last announcer that’s ever actually made me stop watching. Madden has a radio show here in Pittsburgh on WXDX. I’m not sure if he’s worse on his current show, or his days on Monday Nitro.

I started watching Impact again after Josh Mathews got kicked off commentary. My gosh this! Josh was ok in WWE but he was terrible in Impact. He didn’t sound like he was produced at all. Not that it matters but I have a degree in Mass Communications/Broadcast and Excalibur is the worst announcer of a national wrestling product of ALL TIME. He tries too hard to seem like a wrestling intellectual. He calls moves by their video game names (that WWE created lol.) He steps on the other announcers constantly and doesn’t know how to be part of an announce team as he constantly says one of the in-ring participant’s last name then dead air and it keeps the other announcers from speaking. “And Moxley…..” And last but not least he corrects the other announcers who literally have announced wrestling for bigger shows and for much much longer.

I have to mention the announce team of Bruce Pritchard, Mike McGuirk and Pete Doherty, that used to do the WWF Shows in Houston in the late 80's. Bruce Pritchard was as bland and generic as possible. Mike McGuirk was OK but much better as a ring announcer. Pete Doherty sounded like what Gilbert Gottfried would sound like, if he was trying to be a tough guy.

The guy who replaced Kevin Kelly for NJPW currently. Kevin Kelly wasn't great, but at least he had some sort of personality and didn't always sound like he was just reading off a page of notes. Walker Stewart. Soon as I realise he's doing the solo English commentary, I switch to Japanese. He's not too bad paired with Chris, but solo he's intolerable. Never knows what's going on, doesn't research outside of going to someone's championships and accomplishments section on Wikipedia and everything is announced in the exact same voice. In his defense though, the dude's like 22, so I hope he finds his feet.

Am I the only one who kind of liked Josh Matthews and Matt Striker on ECW? Yes, I hate Matt Striker 99% of the time, but for some reason I found them refreshing to Cole/Lawler or whatever pairings they had going on the main shows at the time. That team were relatively liked around here at the time, but with a rich vein of Striker haters in the mix. His MLW run has soured a lot of people on Striker and TNA has for Josh.

Lawler phoning in in after about 2003. Just awful.
JBL shouting and reading out Wikipedia.
Booker is unlistenable.

Watch one of WWF's house shows at the Sam Houston Coliseum to experience the unmitigated horrors of Pete Doherty on commentary. Oh God, YES. He yelled and geez-the absolute WORST in my book

A little bit like one of my grandfathers when he was alive (Nice guy, but you couldn't understand a word he was saying because of it).

Joey Styles was not good enough to call Backlash. In fact, he was never good. Smarmy, holier-than-thou know-it-all.

He was friggin' awful, though I got quite a laugh out of his anti-sports entertainment rant mentioning Vampiro wrestling there without facepaint and dreads, mainly because Vampiro went right back to that look years after that for WSX.

I know several people mentioned Kris Kloss, but what about the guy with the heavy Spanish accent that he announced with in XPW? He would literally scream at every big or stupid spot, and since this was XPW there were many. Not sure what his name was, what his background in wrestling was, or where he is now. But he SUCKED.

JBL shouting and reading out Wikipedia. FURTHER READING, MAGGLE! TABLE OF CONTENTS! JBL really drives me up a wall, but I always appreciate how literally he took King Booker. I know that's a regular heel commentator thing to do, but there was something kind of adorable about him talking about royalty and majesty all the time. This is of course in stark contrast to him doing a Nazi salute that one time and in general being an awful person.
