Yeah, the payoff to this isn't a Perry vs Punk match, it's getting Perry and his new gimmick over. It's character motivation. His time as a heel before all of this happened wasn't exactly winning rave reviews and he has more buzz around him now. When AEW finally bring him back, he's going to be in a better position than he was before his suspension. Whether he runs with that momentum and keeps it is a different question. Yeah that does make sense as a potential goal of this. I’d be curious to see if that translates to AEW (and outside of Chicago).

The overall story is that the Young Bucks are playing up the power hungry, can't manage a Target schtick that Punk/Cornette/ect. have been throwing at them for years in response to the Perry/Punk fight and the reset AEW went under throughout the winter.
They aren't "the company", they're the privileged superstars that want to overpower Tony Kahn and bend all of the rules in their favor and make the company in their image and promote their friends and allies above everyone else.

The show was literally in Chicago. He was heeling on the crowd. That’s a cop out though because he wouldn’t have done that nonsense if he didn’t get into a fight with Punk backstage. Would he have done it in LA or Houston or wherever else to heel on the crowd? We all know why he did it. Anyways I thought it was stupid and I’ve given way more thought to Jack Perry than I ever thought I would in the last few replies. Carry on lads. This is a weird criticism? He only heeled out on Chicago because of the Punk incident... yeah, like... of course. Why would you heel out on Punk randomly for no reason? That's just linear time

That's just linear time His entire character has been "AEW threw me under the bus because CM Punk was an ass" since he went to Japan. Anyone paying any attention knew that he'd be doing this in Chicago because that's his entire character motivation right now. But also, he's been doing it in Japan (he did Matthew's locomotion Northern Lights Suplexes and apron kick & Punk's shitty Macho Man tribute elbow drop in his New Japan Cup match) so this whole thing is people looking to argue about something they actively dont want to understand because they don't like it.

Bounce a beachball? Of course they were going to react on both sides. Props to him for embracing it and not just ignoring it.

I just don't think Jungle Boy got the juice to be anything resembling a top heel and it seems like a prime example of a promoter being like "goddamn, if it didn't work last time, give em' the ol razzle dazzle!"
And hey, razzle dazzle works sometimes! But you gotta carry your weight and just remembering this dude cutting junior high play promos in a jacket like a literal child cosplaying what they think a wrestling heel is doesn't give a lot of hope.
All of THAT being said...at least you're trying to get some of the cats you got over instead of just bringing in new toys which has been one of my biggest critiques of Tony so hey. At least you got the right spirit even if I don't think this specific act will result in much of anything productive.

You are simultaneously trying to say it's "just your opinion" but then replying and telling people they are wrong for having the opposite opinion. It's clear what they are doing with Perry, if you don't like it fine, but why keep responding to folks explaining that they do? We get it, you don't like it. Like 4 posts ago.

I think Jack looks SO MUCH better with the full beard. He doesn't look like a kid anymore and, more importantly, doesn't look like Jungle Boy anymore.

Man,I know a beard can make a man look very different but it was never more ture in wrestling.
You have extreme examples like Jay White and Danielson but Perry with a bear looks much less of a baby boy.

If he comes back to a great reaction and is in a better place than he was on the card, the latter or which almost feels like a given at this point given he's likely to do something with the Elite, would we say airing the footage worked out pretty well? There seems to be a lot more interest in Jack Perry than I can ever remember, I know I'm looking forward to him coming back a lot more than I was before, and he seems to be doing well on the merch sales front if that floats your boat.
Obviously it was more Windy City Riot that got everyone a bit more hyped about him, but a lot of the reactions he got there were surely enhanced by the footage having aired. Wonder if that's what Tony Khan meant when he said it was interesting timing, Punk talking shit about them, that maybe they always planned to air the footage right before what was pencilled in as Perry's final NJPW appearance, in Chicago of all places, and Punk just happened to run his mouth around the same sort of time. I know a few places said it was done with the primary idea being to embarrass Punk but they focussed so little on him and so much more on Jack Perry and FTR that I don't know if I buy it.

So I personally think you are right but that man needs to clear any changes with Skye Blue first. If I am Fletcher her opinion comes before my character 😂🤣

So that's 6K in Chicago and 10K in St. Louis who went nuts for him and chanted "OOOOOH CRY ME A RIIIIVVEERRR!!"
Big sad day for the "His career is over, he'll never recover" crowd lmfao

My favorite moment of tonight was the massive pop for Jack Perry and the pop for the Young Bucks winning.
Jack Perry was unfairly trashed by a certain segment of the wrestling fan base and it is awesome to see these guys, Perry in particular, prove them wrong.
Dude deserves this. Looking forward to seeing his run. I can see Perry becoming a huge star.

Absurdly cheeky way to redebut him. Sting mask run-in leading to a "Yep, you know exactly how I got here" smirk.
Seriously, that smirk was absolutely perfect.

I know a few places said it was done with the primary idea being to embarrass Punk but they focussed so little on him and so much more on Jack Perry and FTR that I don't know if I buy it. I'd say that, most likely, both things are true: "maybe this'll finally shut that guy up" but with a clear goal of "let's establish the return of one of our longtime wrestlers off of this". The legacy of showing the footage very likely comes down to how they follow up on this; if Perry really cements himself as a top guy moving forward and the crowd's more invested in what he does now, then it'll have been worthwhile. People can talk about how it confused motivations for the crowd (e.g. the "why are the heel Young Bucks airing this when it's very likely to get them babyface reactions against Punk's real life friends" argument) to some degree for the match, but it's a case where the long term benefit may far outweigh any initial weirdness, if they play their cards right.
