I always find it interesting the outrage over new types of technologies that either scare people, or annoy them. But then I heard someone say something along the lines of "if it ends up helping even a small amount of people, make their lives better, then I'm all for it." and it shifted my mindset.
For me, I hear a lot of fear of AI. Especially among either artists, freelancers, or conspiracy theorists afraid of some skynet uprising.
But, I've recently decided to check out chat gpt, and it's a freaking game changer as far as my language studies go.
I can ask it questions about languages that are low in resources. Like, I recently took up Cantonese, but googling info sends me a lot of Mandarin Chinese resources. The few Cantonese resources are either all in chinese, not explained well, the website is clunky, or their are issues surrounding the type of language they use. Cantonese is a very colloquial language, very different from their written langauge, so it's hard getting info and verifying whether I'm getting the written language or spoken language. I do have language partners, and apps where I can ask natives, but when you got so many questions, it feels like a burden to keep asking. And even then, you don't always get an answer in a timely manner.
ChatGPT, I can ask a huge amount of questions, create a large vocabulary list in a short amount of time, ask for verification and examples of said vocabulary or grammar. or translate idioms, or words used in specific contexts.
Also, if you're learning a language with a lot of dialects like say Spanish, you can ask it to narrow it down a specific country where that language is used.
Before ChatpGPT, I also had a few tricks with Google translate that helped me up my game as far as my studies went. People crapped on the translations, but for a language like Chinese or japanese, it was great to at least see the romanized pronunciation for words I hadn't learned yet. Also, the way it added features over the years, has been super useful like Translating pictures, live real time translating with the camera, audio transcription/translating, etc.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist by any stretch of the imagination, but AI is a double edged sword to me. Working in IT, I see a lot of benefit, but since humans gotta human, AI can be very dangerous. It also isn't crazy to think that AI could become sentient and wreck some shit.
As far as outdated technology, are books considered that? I hate ebooks and feel like I don't absorb the information, but you give me that physical copy and I feel like having that book in my hands, I get so much more out of it.
I also hate game emulators. I'll do whatever it takes to keep my N64 and PS2 working until the day I die.

It is actually very crazy to think that AI as it is now could be come sentient.
It is a pattern recognizer, that's it... there is no thinking involved.
Calling it AI is marketing, it's not at all what anyone thinks of when they hear AI.
Also you need to be careful with using chatGPT to learn things, it LOVES to make shit up and push it as real, complete with fake sources.

Out in my man cave I have 2 TV's set up, a 42" LCD and 27" CRT specifically for gaming. The CRT has my SNES, NES and Atari Jr. hooked up to it and the LCD has fat PS2, Slim PS3, XBox 360S, Wii U, N64, Mega Drive 2, Dreamcast, and GameCube hooked up to it. I've also got a Colecovision and Intellivision out there as well, just not always hooked up. And that's without mentioning my handhelds hahaha

I get that AI isn't that advanced right now. We are barely in phase 1. It is when phase 2 and 3 come along (and all of the start stops in between) that I am slightly worried about.

I only download books to my kindle if they're too niche for my local library to carry (I dont have a bookstore near me, just wal-mart's limited book section), ie, comics and non-fiction.

See if you can get the books you want using Inter Library Loan. Used it years back to get a pile of Comic TPBS in from other libraries to the one in town. I use CDs often. She makes fun of my huge CD case in the car. Until we get to an area with no cell signal and her Spotify aint working. Then it is all "Oh what cds do you have?" nah you made fun of them listen to the crappy radio.... I kept until 2021 a VHS vcr hooked up to one of my tvs. Mostly for watching VHS but rare occasions I would use it to record something. Got a DVD recorder hooked up to another TV in the house. For when something rare airs on Dish and I want a physical copy.
