I know it was very good for its time but I heard so much growing up about Steamboat/Savage and when I saw it, I was like - that was pretty solid. Nothing that set my world on fire though. I thought Bret's matches in the early 90s is when the work really went to another level in the WWF.

Some of these matches are just a product of their time.
I have a younger friend who thinks the original Exorcist is goofy, and stupid. But holy hell was that a massively big deal in the 70's. Shit like that hadn't been done before and turned culture on its ear. Me explaining that people were throwing up, boycotting the movie, leaving the theater, doesn't do anything to sway his opinion because he just says "why?".
That's how it is with something like Steamboat/Savage. Looking back it's not going to light your world ablaze, but back then that match was on another level from everything else. It's special.
Like telling someone their mother sucks cocks in hell.

A lot of those 90's AJPW matches.
I'm convinced the people who gush about have only seen the clipped matches from compilations, or fan made music videos and gifs with the head drops and shit.
A whole lot of nothing rest holds happen in those matches.

Steamboat-Savage, Wrestlemania 3. “Let’s blow off a hot injury angle with a bunch of 2 counts that all feel like 2 counts.” Here’s my thought on that match. Steamboat was the ultimate babyface and wasn’t the best someone to a bloody pulp type. He knew the best way to hurt Savage was to take away the IC title. He lost his cool a bit at the start with the big choke spot. But Steamboat was trying to win the match at all costs. The fact the did so many near falls on roll ups and then it was won with a small package really pays off the story to me.

It has its fans, but Bret vs. Backlund at Survivor Series ‘94 bores me to tears until the final few minutes.

HHH vs HBK at SummerSlam 2002 felt "Meh" to me.

Bret vs. Owen at SummerSlam '94. Used the cage itself as a crutch and was just really boring as a result. I saw this match in person, so my opinion is a little different. This was the inaugural event at the then brand new United Center (WWE actually used the building before the Bulls), and the energy was epic. My pick is the first Kenny Omega vs Okada match. I saw it about a week after it happened, and after it gained a lot of hype when Dave Meltzer gave it six stars. It was a good match, but my expectations were way too high, and I’ve had no desire to watch it back again.

Steamboat-Savage, Wrestlemania 3. “Let’s blow off a hot injury angle with a bunch of 2 counts that all feel like 2 counts.” I came in just to say this. It's not that the match was bad per se, but it's been praised to high heavens to the point where it's overrated. Plus, it didn't match the tone of their feud. Savage put Steamboat out on the shelves for months when it crushed his larynx, it should've been a grudge match which both men are capable of having. Personally speaking, I thought Savage's Wrestlemania VII match with The Ultimate Warrior(yes, Warrior) was much better with the drama that their careers were on the line. I also second Bret Hart/Shawn Michaels' iron man match at Wrestlemania XII.
