The Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore has collapsed into the river. There is video footage in which you see the bridge collapse and it appears that it was struck by a container ship. It’s breaking news but anyone on that bridge at the time is now probably in the river below. Hopefully they can get to everyone as quick as possible, link

not only is that a disaster with no one remotely likely to make it out okay, that is going to absolutely cripple baltimore. everything revolves around that area.

That is just awful, hopefully the emergency services can help as many as they can. Though I imagine the Baltimore river is very cold at this time of year.
At least it didn't happen at rush hour or during the day.

Insane. It looked like the ship was having electrical problems as the lights were flashing before contact.

Insane. It looked like the ship was having electrical problems as the lights were flashing before contact. Yeah, a close video makes it look like the ship lost power twice. There was nothing the crew could do once it lost power the first time. That amount of weight moving, it ain't turning on a dime.

A couple of people were rescued from the freezing water. On the plus side, there was construction going on that would have limited the traffic on the bridge, but there definitely was cars that went into the river.
This is a disaster on many levels. There’s the personal tragedy of people dying. There’s the loss of a major thoroughfare. Lastly, there’s the fact that a major port is blocked for some time.

The ship's crew was able to get out a mayday call to the port authority before colliding with the bridge. They were able to clear out a lot of car traffic and construction workers on the bridge before the bridge was destroyed. Between that and the time of night it occurred, it's real lucky that a lot of potential loss of life was prevented.

I saw the video of that this morning. My God... that boat made it look like the bridge was made of toothpicks. Scary and sad!

I thought the video of the truck hanging off the bridge of the Ohio River was bad, but at least nobody was hurt. This is just a disaster.

So with the search suspended there are six people presumed dead. It should go without saying that whilst this is a tragic event, given the magnitude of the collapse, the fact that only six people might have died is miraculous. Even when you factor in the details of it being one of the quietest periods for traffic, then it’s still amazing that the numbers aren’t much higher.

It might be more appropriate to change the name of the thread to "Bridge collapse in Baltimore" or something similar. Mass casualty incident makes it sound like a shooting or bomb happened. Or that way more people died.

The top headline on reddit for a bit was something like "Francis Scott Key Bridge closed after incident" Yeah, I'd say it's closed! I saw a headline today "Investigation Continues into Bridge Collapse" And I know what they mean, but my first thought was "Probably the big f***ing boat"

I have gotten rather irritated at the conspiracy theorist who are trying to turn this into a black flag operation by the US government or a cyber attack by China/Israel/Iran/etc. it’s the result of a poorly maintained, understaffed vessel failing at an inopportune time. Nothing more.

Nothing more. If this was an intentional attack it would've been at a much busier time than "1:30 am on a bridge that's currently limiting traffic due to construction with warning given out beforehand to avoid even more casualties." People's brains are rotted.
