As in, times when a match is announced early on an episode of Raw/Nitro/whatever, and then there are segments throughout the show building to the match happening later that same night. What's the most someone has managed to hype up a match in just a couple of hours?

I immediately thought of Triple Vs Jericho on Raw for the WWF Title, but I can't remember if the match was announced prior to the night and it was just the Title stipulation that was made in the night?

was HHH/Jeff Hardy for the IC title a one night thing that eventually led to the two man power trip doing all that shit or was it the catalyst?
if it counts that one

This came right to mind as well. The way I remember it, it was impromptu and came together in the opening segment of the show

The HHH v Flair title match on Raw in 03. I was coming to mention this one as well. Great build and great match. They actually made me believe Flair was winning the title for a second.

The Dallas 10-Man Raw in 2000. Radicalz turn heel and join HHH to beat down Foley after the HHH/Cactus Cell match is set with Mick's career on the line. HHH then sets up HHH/X-Pac/Benoit/Malenko/Saturn vs. Foley later that night. A five on one match? No! The Rock arrives later and announces that it's not gonna be five on one, it's gonna be five on...two. Foley later cuts a short but impassioned promo saying he didn't ask for The Rock's help (or anyone's help, as the implication is that anyone who helps Foley against HHH/DX/Radicalz is doomed) but he's not stupid enough to turn it down. Main event time comes and it's still five on...two, but then Too Cool and Rikishi come out to even the sides. And it all ends with the Most Jacked Kane Possible making his return to run off the heel army.
Maybe the most electric Raw main event crowd ever? Maybe the best single Raw ever? Sets up a huge PPV rematch, creates impossible odds for a face to overcome, basically seals Rock's face turn without taking anything from Foley, gets Too Cool and Rikishi over as guys who can main event, seals it with a surprise return, and the crowd is as into this as they've ever been into anything.

The Raw after Summerslam 99 when HHH wins the world title for the first time. The show opens with him demanding a title shot and he ends up grabbing JR and threatening to hurt him if he doesn't one. He gets the shot but breaks his arm anyway and plots with Shane throughout the night and they end up screwing over Mankind and taking the title in the main event. I always thought it was funny that Lawler brought it up when HHH returned in 2002. JR was going crazy praising him and Lawler is like "JR, this is the same man who broke your arm!" The Dallas 10-Man Raw in 2000. Radicalz turn heel and join HHH to beat down Foley after the HHH/Cactus Cell match is set with Mick's career on the line. The funny thing is that Kane was at the Rumble so he had only been gone a couple weeks but the way the crowd and commentary reacted you'd think it was this big triumphant return after been gone for a year or something.

Man Too Cool was perfect during that era

It didn't pan out, but when Mr Perfect was going to return to face HHH, they spent most of Raw hyping a match that never happened.

4/13/1998 Raw setting up a Stone Cold vs. Vince McMahon match and building towards it all night, only for it to never really happen as Dude Love attacked Austin to end the show. Very notable example of this as the tease of Austin and Vince maybe having a match helped Raw finally beat WCW Nitro in the ratings after 83 weeks of losses.

The Kane-Austin rematch for the title on RAW the night after King of the Ring has to be up there, unless we're considering KOTR and its buildup to be part of this match's buildup.

"The Rock says this, now, on to tonight. Cactus Jack, you got yourself in a situation where it's 5 on 1. Well, the Rock says this, tonight, your situation is not 5 on 1, it's 5 on... 2." I went nuts and it's still amazing 24 years later.

HHH vs Rikishi in early 2000 Smackdown, where Rikishi won that lottery to face HHH for the title. The joke winners of Moolah and Andre The Giant made HHH get cocky and arrogant, than when Finkle pulls out Rikishi, he gets mad in frustration. That immediately sold Rikishi as a legit threat.

One of the last times I managed to watch an entire WWE Raw was when Miz had to defend his title against Bobby Lashley and spent the entire daggone episode trying to find a way out of the match (faking stomach pains to get the match cancelled, begging Drew McIntyre for help, running away for a count out) until inevitably facing him in the main event (Lumberjack match) and being outright murdered.
It was pretty glorious.
