No, I don't think so. He just left for a while, went crazy, and came back.

I always liked Steele's explanation of what happened.
Steele said that one day when cutting a promo, Vince told him he was making too much sense for an "animal". So Steele figured he'd mock Vince's suggestion by playing it over the top on his next vignette, however Vince told Steele it was perfect, and he ended up getting stuck with it.

It is but for George, it did work out well and allowed him to have a distinct personality from who he was in real life. If you watched George Steele in the ring and then the next morning went to one of his classes he taught, you may see a resemblence, but they'd be nothing the same on terms of the person and thats the essence of what characterization does.

I still find it funny that George “The Animal” Steele had a second job as a teacher. Probably the biggest disconnect between gimmick and real life occupation.

So did heel George Steele cut normal promos during the 70s?

And this actually is what inspired me to ask. I am remembering an Apter mag profile that said something about him disappearing briefly then returning unintelligible, after being rumored to have spent time in an asylum.

Wow! Never knew that. I started watching in 1990 so the only time I saw Steele was renting Coliseum Videos. I always thought he was the grunting, growling Animal character. Aside from the TNT skit where shock therapy enabled him to speak.

I love the "avoid nouns, because he'll turn a noun into a prop" advice I'm surprised they didn't try anything like that with Bret Hart as a Hitman. Only WCW did that via an action figure.

I never knew why WCW released a Bret figure dressed as an old time gangster. In fairness I didn't know that figure existed until a few years ago, but still. 🤦♂️

I still find it funny that George “The Animal” Steele had a second job as a teacher. Probably the biggest disconnect between gimmick and real life occupation. Every once in a while a student would ask him if he was George the Animal and he'd hand wave it away with "You don't think I'm that ugly, do you?" He didn't teach in the same territory he wrestled, but kids would get the magazines and figure it out.
