boy now that shit was crazy no?
it was around january of last year (yes it has only been a year and change since that night) and a bunch of reports came out that Vince had come back and sold WWE to Saudi Arabia. it was very quickly announced by a bunch of wrestling journalists that it was as good as done, at least from the usual twitter/youtube types and all hell broke loose. i can remember friends here i talk with often who outright despised WWE at the time and even they were extremely sad about this, rightfully so. it would've been the end of people like Sami Zayn in the company, Mustafa Ali when he was still there, all of the LGBTQ+ talent and a whole lot more than that. the ramifications of this happening as people were talking about it online felt like shooting shit around the boiler room of the titanic, the titan towers titanic.
for once in the history of online wrestling discussion, this felt like the sole time where it was pretty much unanimous that people actually got along on a subject no matter what show they watched. people knew that the biggest north american wrestling company being sold to the saudis would be disastrous for anyone who has wrasslin' as their craft. hell i'm pretty sure i almost threw up hearing about it and i couldn't have given a damn about WWE at the time, just the thought of a company i grew up watching going the sports washing route was insanely depressing. for me at least it was mostly because i knew that if it did happen, all of wrestling would be more or less f***ed within a decade or so. the deal which turned out to be false dropping so quick after it came out that the company would be sold also didn't help matters, no time to prepare for it.
as it turns out, it didn't happen and a few months after that, the company was sold to endeavor. think about how wwe is now a year later when barely over a year ago we thought that shit was "capital D" Done. it really puts it into perspective when you go back and see the reactions online over what that would have done to wrestling as a whole, the insanity of WWE being as popular as it is now and the potential of the rot within it also now getting eradicated god willing. it is something i have thought about more and more as the last few months have really ramped up the WWE/AEW fan badminton match going on, because of each companies ratings and whether each is hot or cold. it puts things into perspective because all it takes is one crazy ass old man to potentially destroy an entire industry that you have an attachment to.
that was a super unique day (maybe a full day?) that is up there with some of the more bizarre days in wrestling that I can remember. a couple in the 00's do come to mind.
do you remember this night or have you thought about how much that day sucked since? how did you feel about it?
