This was brought up in the live thread for NXT this week and it IS a conundrum that WWE is about to face here. Two future prospects in Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams had a cage match that never really got going and it came up that both of them had their best career matches thus far, against llja Dragunov. It seems highly likely in a matter of weeks that Dragunov is going to get drafted to the main roster and go on the big money run he's earned and deserves.
But that's going to leave a GAPING hole in NXT. It's no secret that the men's side of things in NXT is a bit lacking in depth in terms of established in-ring specialists (probably why the women have to keep bailing them out), and the ones they do have (Axiom, Frazer, Dijak) are bolstering up the tag and North American divisions. It's probably why they've been so quick to get Je'Von Evans into the TV rotation. But with NXT about to be involved in the Draft again, it asks the question... Who can you send from main roster to fill the Dragunov role? The one name that was mentioned was Sheamus. Dude's just come back, still able to perform at his best, but at the same time is someone who's already had a bunch of main roster success so it's not like he's being deprived of anything (other than the IC belt, I guess). Chad Gable would've been good for this too, but he's about to go on a big heel arc on the main roster, so he's probably not an option.
Either way, it's going to be a hard gap to fill if Dragunov does get called up.

That's kind of the fun of NXT.
Someone will inevitably fit that role, the question is who and when.
