(Language and normal Nerd stuff) More of a retrospective episode over the normal "Nerd on the couch" episodes. This is also the 20th anniversary (YEP, it's been 20 years now) video. Also his answer is 4. Mainly for the multi-directional whip.

I never got to play the NES games growing up so I went with Super Castlevania for the SNES.

Him not even playing the GB Advance games negates this entire video for me.

There's Symphony of the Night and then there's the rest of the series.

AVGN should revisit the N64 Castlevania games. Especially the one with Blue Crescent Moon the werewolf.

I know it's not very good but my heart says Lament of Innocence only because of how hilariously obvious the twist was.

I know Metroidvanias really took over, but I'll always think the core nature of Castlevania is an action platformer where it feels like the castle itself is an entity actively trying to stop you. My biggest qualm with the Metroidvanias has usually been that the environment just feels kind of flat, since it's not as emphasized in the gameplay style...well, that, and just how easy you can make the bosses with enough leveling up, but that's just something inherent to a lot of RPG style games.
Doesn't change that Symphony of the Night has a pretty killer soundtrack, though.

IV, III, I, in that order, are my favourites. IV is one of the best action platformers ever in my opinion. By the time I gave Symphony of the Night a real chance it was around 2010 and the greatest game in the world wouldn't be enough to get me to put up with the 5 minute run around to try again after you die. Why is there no retry? Why the f*** do I have to be returned to the start screen and go through all that bullshit again if I die?

I enjoy all three on NES as well as SOTN. Super Castlevania is alright, but I never loved it the same way as the others despite owning it the longest. Castlevania X might be the single most disappointing Castlevania game I've ever played, and is very disappointing overall. I have played the Gameboy games as well and those are barely playable. I own the 64 versions but haven't sat down to really give them a lot of attention, so I can't say.
Ranking the games I've played;
Dracula's Curse Symphony of the Night Castlevania Simon's Quest IV Belmont's Revenge Dracula X Adventure Legends

I will say of the Nintendo 64 games: to me they're a great example of a game (well, plural in this case) being more interesting due to having a lot of ambition behind it even if the execution didn't fully hit the mark...and when you read about the development history of the game you can tell there was plenty more they wanted to do, but likely couldn't due to the limitations of the era. They got a lot of flack from people over the years, but were reviewed strongly early on in large part due to that ambition showing through - the day/night cycle, having a waxing and waning moon (would've loved for that to be more of an influence on things like enemy strength), vampiric status effects, and one of the most ominous atmospheres of any games in the series, actually getting closer to that 'horror' feeling than the series typically does.
But, again...the execution, particularly that first generation 3D stuff (wonky camera, some imprecise platforming, etc.), is a legitimate concern.

None of the Castlevania games on the NES were any good. Way too hard. I much prefer the fourth one.

I think if Konami never released CV64 and made Legacy of Darkness the sole release, the whole venture would be remembered a lot more fondly. Castlevania 64 was basically a beta test of LoD masquerading as a full price game only for them to release the latter less than a year later.
When you think about it, Konami really innovated the whole early access thing decades before it became so widespread in AAA gaming lol.

4 has a great soundtrack too.
Just wondering...does he at any time mention/roast Haunted Castle?

AVGN should do a video on this game and it's sequel. My favorite believe it or not, has always been Simon's Quest. That game should be remade with a more Metroid-vania style.
