We’ve probably all thought about this at some point.
If you were employed in the wrestling industry what would you want to be?
If as a wrestler what’s your name? Gimmick? Finisher?
Maybe you’d want to be manager, referee, booker, run your own company, etc…

Used to always use Matt Draven as a gimmick name, but Matt Taven getting famous kinda takes some shine off that one. I'd a manager/occasional wrestler, nowhere near as athletic as I would need to be to be a successful wrestler at my height. Diamond Cutter was usually my finish as a backyard geek, but also used Blue Thunder Bomb and a hybrid Sky High/Pop up Powerbomb

I'd want to be the spiritual successor to Doug Dellinger and have the commentators hype me as the ultimate end boss with my pot belly and polo shirts.

Well, I'd never make it as a wrestler, I just wouldn't lol. So I'd be a booker personally, of course my shows would be boring but that's what I'd be. If I had enough money saved up I'd look into starting my own one day, I briefly thought about doing just that irl too but, well yeah that idea was never going to work unless I won the lottery.

If I was a wrestler, I'd simply compete under my full name, because that's what my gimmick would be: being myself. As far as finisher goes, I'd pick the death valley driver and name it "Rayna Von Tosh Driver".
Regarding promotions, if I have the money/power, I'd start one under the name of Diversity Pro (D-Pro), an all inclusive promotion.

I would want to be the most despised heel manager in the history of the business. It’s a high bar, but I believe I could clear it.
There are absolutely zero lines I wouldn’t trample in the name of heel heat, and I’d be glad to get my comeuppance at every turn.

I'd be the new theme music guy, except I'd make the entire roster enter to synthwave, Italo Disco, old school video game music or other synthesizer bullshit, because that's all I know how to make.

I’ll bite.
In some other hypothetical fantasy land, if I was going to be a wrestler I suppose I’d try to be a modern take on some of my favorites like Terry Funk, Stan Hansen. The cowboy types. I reckon that would look a lot like what Hangman Page is doing, although I’d probably try to be even more of a throwback.
If I had my own promotion, on the other hand (again, in this fantasy land where I’m just successful because it’s my own world) I’d run a legit sports-based promotion. Would probably take Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport concept and build from that. Still integrating other styles like lucha, hardcore (to end blood feuds) but it would be basically what AEW had initially promised. Production style would be more akin to NJPW where it’s high-budget but very, very classy and not as obnoxious as American mainstream wrestling tends to look.
It’s funny the little quirks and things we all have about wrestling lol. What a thing to be a fan of.

I was (very briefly) a manager for a local mudshow group. It was fun, but I wasn't in the best headspace at the time, the shows were awful, the guy running them even worse, and even then I wasn't built for bumping. Part of me would love to do it again because I'd be much better at it now, except for the fact that I can't run as well as I did then, and now my spine is out of alignment, so bumping is an even worse idea.

My plan back in August 92 when I shipped off for Army BCT was do my 4 years. Then get out goto the Malenko Wrestlign school in Florida and be a wrestler.
Then messed up my knee and both shoulders while in the Army.
I like where I am now. Get in early hang out. Film some matches vend help out some. Then after the show help clean up.
Yea it would be fun to book a fed. But any ideas I have I now got 3 different feds/bookers I can give them to and they might be used.
Just see first hand how easy it is to lose a pile of money running a show. Rather not have my money at risk.

I would love to either manage or do commentary.
In my secondary career as a semiprofessional neckbeard, I'm technically a heel if the 1 Called Manders comes up. At least in the fact that I talk a lot of smack, then when he comes "home" I'm forced to eat crow.

I'd love to be a booker. Being a promoter might be more of a headache than it's worth, but I'd love to see my ideas come to life.
I'd also want to work as a manager. My name would be J. Michael Goldstein (my first initial, middle name and original family name), and would have a yuppie gimmick.

A security guard at a wrestling event a few years back told me I should go down to Florida and try to get into the business. I absolutely wouldn't make it as a wrestler, too much of a klutz, but maybe a commentator. I could maybe do some fun things with color commentary. Or a booker. Something to do with character driven aspects, you know.

I used to co-own, promote and book a small UK fed in 2012-2013. I also used to wrestle on the shows, as well as some other local promotions. It was fun, but stressful, as I had my hand in every aspect. I left for a while then came back for a couple runs just wrestling. My most recent was 2022-2023.
That's me done now as far as being in ring and working other promotions. However, if I had a bit of cash and the space to do it I would set up a hobby/backyard fed. I would probably wrestle occasionally, but it would largely be a chance for others to get reps in and have fun in front of a small crowd.

For some reason a rich person lets me run a tiny wrestling improv promotion, think who's line is it anyway.
It would rip off some things I've seen elsewhere. Like a match where famous theme tunes are played every minute and one of the wrestlers then has to switch to wrestling as that person. Then their opponent adopts the moves and mannerisms of the next one.
Or just prompts from the show like wrestling as a high-energy android who keeps running out of power and recharges by kissing someone's head.
For some magical reason, or for money, moderately successful wrestlers would want to appear in it.

I miss doing commentary. At first our commentary was just loaded with inside jokes to pop the boys after they saw the footage.
Then for the stint in SWA when it was Quarters and I as the commentary team those inside jokes just became a bit less inside. Even now at an SWA show and this is 7 years later the commentary team will make jokes about people being dumb in Sontag MS. Or how women from Arkansas are money hungry.
Just dumb little jokes we did to make 10 people laugh that became part of the lore of SWA.
The bad part of commentary is you never know when an innocent remark will piss off someone.
Example. In SWA for years the heel tag team was Black Ranger 1 and 2. Heels so at shows I would make Power Ranger jokes about them on the commentary. Crowd loved it the faces loved it.
Find out 2 shows later Black Ranger 2 is pissed about me yelling SUMMON YOUR ZORD when he was getting beat down. then saying "His mask looks like he turned his cheap flea market drawers into a wrestling mask. He needs a real pro mask like I wear."
Hell it has been close to 4 years now since I did commentary proper. I might still make a few comments while filming but actual commentary it has been a long time.
Plus it is so much harder than you think. We did it as the show was happening. With only whoever was near us hearing it until the footage got released.
Gotta think of ways to not have dead air. And be fast on your feet. Plus it helps if you got someoen to bounce stuff off of that you know well. The best commentary crew we had was 3 of us.
Had Koby Quarters as the face commentary guy,Big Country Tommy as the call the moves guy, then Ultimo Gallos as the color/heel guy.
You know you are doing good as heel commentary when you got some in the crowd wanting to fight you.
