Anybody ever read this? I'm starting a rehearsal for it tonight and just curious what those who've read it/seen it thought of it. I know it's supposed to be hysterical, I just prefer not to read shows beforehand too much (it gives me too many pre-concieved ideas)

All I know is that Mel Brooks did a TV Movie of this in 1971. Here's the plot from IMDB.com
in the 1700's some rich young man is considered a very eligible bachelor, but he was so shy that none of the young society types had a chance with him, he literally ran away when introduced to them. However, he was very handy with the hired staff, i.e. the tavern wenches and scullery maids. Juliet Mills gets wind of this, and poses as such to catch his attention. And that is the basis of the story!

I know I'm playing the best friend of that guy, it's one of the other male leads, he's named Hastings.
If Mel Brooks made it into a movie it has to be funny!! I just don't like to go into shows with too many pre-concieved ideas about "what to do with a role". I like to find out the old fashion way by trial and error (sometimes you come up things people haven't thought of before because it's the opposite of what most people would do, and the director will love it)

Well, it looks like it'll be a funny show.
It's a very much mistaken identity, battle of the social classes type of comedy.

I read it in high school--we called it "Jane Austen on crack," which is not quite chronologically accurate. It's funny but very comedy of manners.
