So I busted out this lil graphic novel the other day, I've had it for quite some time but haven't read it for a bit, but it's good stuff. Now as most of y'all know I'm not a big fan of latter day Venom, I feel they really cooked down his character as he grew in popularity, making him a psuedo hero, bringing along Carnage, symbiotes symbiotes symbiotes galore, and really just plain ol' overexposure to the point that I didn't really care about the character that much beyond really small doses.
However, in this book, he's more like the Venom from his first few appearances that I really dug, big and powerful, but also crafty and cunning, as they remembered that yeah, Eddie Brock was a buff dude and Venom is physically imposing, but he was also educated, inventive and dangerous. I like how Fingeroth remembered that side and didn't just a physical danger. Bonus points for Ron Lim ( who does great art throughout) for toning down the whole huge tongue, row upon row of fangs and green spittle ever incarnation after Larsen has had too. Granted they're on full display on the cover, but not AS much in the book.
The story is just fun, Venom's in the Vault, circumstances get him in position to lead an escape with a whole mess of villains, the Avengers get called in to quell the uprising. Meanwhile the government sponsored Freedom Force ( the erstwhile Brotherhood of Evil Mutants- Mystique, Blob, Pyro et al) also get called in and there's tesnion over who these 'reformed' villains will side this. Add in dissension among Venom's group, and a wacky warden who hates superpowers in general and who has access to a bomb to blow the whole Vault, and chaos ensues.
Nothing to deep storyline wise, just a whole mess of heroes battling a whole mess of villains, good art, and Venom done well with not a Spidey in sight, and the whole thing can be had for like ten bucks.
Fun read, two thumbs from me.
