The Fall of Troy/Dir en Grey/Deftones. I'll post REAL impressions tomorrow morning/late afternoon, depending on how tired I am in the morning, but here are temporary short ones because I need to get to bed. The Fall of Troy: Amazing. Just as good in studio as in person. Dir en Grey: Have been waiting to see them FOREVER. Spectacular stuff. Deftones: Eh...boring set. I'll go into more detail...but for now...SLEEP

Okay, as promised, I'm back, and not so tired anymore...so here's a more indepth review. I can't really post setlists, but I'll still describe them to the best of my ability.
The Fall of Troy: They pretty much played material only from Manipulator, which is fine by me...'cause that album is amazing. And yeah...they're absolutely amazing live. The musicianship is just as amazing on stage as it is in the studio...and Thomas is pretty much all over the stage. He talks to the crowd a lot between songs, and he just tends to be all over the place, even as he's playing really intricate stuff. You can tell they're very, very into their shows and music in general...it's such a great show to watch and get into. VERY glad I finally got to see them.
Dir en Grey: OH MY GOD. If I didn't feel like going on, that would pretty much describe DeG live. Kyo is insane...and it was easily the most intense live show I've ever seen. When Kyo screams...you want to scream with him. It's so intense...primal...emotional...it's just, it's a powerful scream, and his singing voice is just as amazing as it is on CD. Kyo pretty much bounces and jumps all over the stage constantly, he shakes...he even basically had a seizure onstage at one point. It was amazingly cool and enthralling to watch. They had a great setlist...and just...yeah. There was also this one part where the lights just went on Kyo and he sang this really cool thing in falsetto and just...yeah. I was surprised there were that many fans of them there though. I didn't figure Kansas was much of a Dir en Grey state. I guess I was wrong.
The only bad part about the DeG show was this drunk dude kept on like...shoving against me and shoving me into some chick, and he was all jumping, and apparently grinding all up on me, all while waving his arms about and hitting me in the head...it was REALLY lame. But the security guard noticed and kicked him out. Fortunately I was pretty much right up at the barricade, so he COULD actually see that happening.
Deftones: I was hoping that, since I was kinda getting into them prior to the show, maybe seeing them live would help...but in all honesty, it just soured me on them all over again. It's not like they were BAD or anything...but they were just so completely uninteresting in every way...and honestly I couldn't tell the difference from one song to the next. There were a couple of interesting moments every now and then, but the music just isn't all that interesting, and they don't really have much stage presence at all. They just kinda get up there and...stand a lot of the time really. I stayed honestly because I know they do love their music, and love making it, and leaving during a set is disrespectful...at least I think it is. But yeah...all in all it was just incredibly dull, and it drug on WAY WAY WAAAAAY too long. It was like almost two hours, I swear. It was SO boring. I couldn't stand it. Though I did run into a couple of people from my town, and that made it cool...but yeah.
Also, their equipment was turned up WAYYYY too high, because at one point it ceased to be music, and just ended up being one big solid noise that made me really dizzy, and my right ear is still ringing because of it. Yeah, it was pretty lame. Oh well.
It was worth it though...simply for TFOT and DeG. AMAZING shows from them.

I'd f***in kill to see The Fall of Troy live. Though the apparent lack of doppleganger is a tad bit dissapointing. Thomas is absolutely ridiculous. He sings, and plays insane legato shit, AND moves at the same time. f***in nuts. Did they bust out any parts of Ghost Ship?

I would have screamed like a little girl if they played anything Ghost Ship related. Well, I screamed like a little girl anyway, and told Thomas that I loved him...but regardless. No, they unfortunately didn't play any from it...but they were the openers for a show in Kansas where no one really knows them, and the Deftones get 8907092837409238740 hours to play...soo yeah.

Bah, the fiends! Nu metal must die! TFOT needs a headlining tour, and they need to get there asses out to Jersey. Fo serious. I think my chest cavity would explode from awesomeness if they played with HORSE the Band

Did Kyo fishhook or stab himself at all? Ugh. I haven't even seen them live and I get goosebumps thinking about it.

I hate Dir en grey with a passion. I wouldn't say I hate them myself, but they're more of a "MEH" IMHO.

Unfortunately no...but that was more during their visual kei era...or maybe they just think it'd be a little TOO intense for an American crowd who has no idea who they are. Who knows? Kyo is still absolutely insane though. He shakes and does all kinds of crap that makes me admire him as a performer. SO amazing.

He did all the crazy mutilation in Minnesota at the Myth sometime this year. A couple of my friends went and they said it was the weirdest thing they had ever seen.
I do enjoy them, though. I'm going to college for radio, and we have a student run station, they get play here in Iowa. Anywhere else in the US?

I doubt they get much around here though.

I'm long past sick of The Deftones but really enjoy The Fall Of Troy and have been curious about Dir En Grey for a while now. What type of music do they play exactly? Looking like they do I'd say I'd have to be a little different. All in all it's a show I would like to have seen.

Dir en Grey...hm, it's tough to classify them really, but there are two eras, with two totally different kinds of music. When they were a visual kei band, their music was a little more upbeat, I guess you'd say, and a little more spastic. Now, they've kinda lost their visual kei element and their music has gotten a little heavier and darker. Kyo's vocal style hasn't changed much...he has an AMAZING singing voice, and can go seamlessly from it into an almost haunting scream, to falsetto, to whatever else. You should check 'em out, most definitely, as long as you don't mind music in other languages (or English you can't really understand)

Sounds good, I'm all for stuff that's unique. Oh btw, I have no idea what a kei element is.
