There's seriously a part called an "xclamp"? What, does EVERYTHING have to start with an x? Do they think this makes it edgy and cool?

Mine's still going strong. The only console the ever crapped out on me was the PS2.

Mine was about to die out on me before I sold it to Gamestop. It kept overheating.
Which is funny, because I have an NES from about 2 years after its launch, and it STILL works just fine.

Isn't it more of a problem with the first wave of XBox 360's, or am I just talking out of my butt here?

I went ahead and chalked mine up. Let it fail on somebody else. (or is that x-fail?) It was fun but IO don't need it. Of all the games they have none of them are life changing experiences and I can only play so many games of baseball waiting for stuff to come out.

Isn't it more of a problem with the first wave of XBox 360's, or am I just talking out of my butt here? nah it's with all the xbox 360's. microsoft for whatever reason decided to put x-clamps on the 360 causing the mother board to bend due to heat. what's worse is when you send in your 360 they'll just replace the xclamps with new xclamps not fixing the problem at all. however I do know what your thinking of. I'm guessing you're thinking of when the powercords were faulty. and I belive that was either first round 360's or just first round xbox's. I'm not sure.

Maybe my friends are just lucky, but I don't know anyone who owns a "defective" 360.

Man, how I miss XBox Live. Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow, Halo 2, all the hours lost on those games. And the free XBox Live for 2 years... haha, Microsoft. Ha. Ha.

ok let me explain the problem better because currently I'm just saying "X-CLAMPS!"
from another board:
If you look at the clamp design, *all* of the pressure to hold the heatsink down is in one tiny point. The centre of the X clamp has a plastic 'spacer button' that sits hard against the bottom of the motherboard and that causes all of the stress to push upwards (towards the bottom centre of both the GPU and the CPU.)
What is the reaction to that upward force? the corners of the motherboard flexing in the opposite direction. Because the motherrboard is not screwed down to the chassis in the areas around the CPU and GPU the natural reaction is for the board to flex downwards slightly because of the pressure in the middle pushing upwards.
When the console gets hot, the solder balls may become slightly softer allowing the board to flex further and the break occurs.
Even if the soldering was perfect the poor design of the heatsink clamps means the corners of the CPU and GPU are going to be under tension.
So perhaps the fix would be to remove the clamps altogether, fit 'screw in' pegs to the chassis and screw down the motherboard and the heatsink so rather than tension being on the board to flex, it is actually encouraged to stay flat. The existing holes in the board where the clamp attached would be ideal.
So extra cooling and other measures may not do squat unless you remove the tension of the giant pimple trying to push up from the bottom.

Mine is working fine, except for one thing, hopefully someone can help me out.
When ever the disc drive is empty and closed, and I want to open the disc drive, it gets stuck and wont open and I have to whack the side of the 360 and it eventually opens up.

My XBox had that same problem after not playing it for 2 years. I flip it upside down, and it opens, no problems. I'm thinking the tray is hitting something, but to look into it takes time, time I do not have.

As of today add me to the 33% failure rate.

33%?
I don't know much about statistics, but wouldn't this be considered a good thing?

33%? I don't know much about statistics, but wouldn't this be considered a good thing? I sounds like one third of them sold fail prematurely. Don't sound too good.

33%? I don't know much about statistics, but wouldn't this be considered a good thing? No, having one third of all devices you send out be returned to you as faulty and having to replace them is not a good thing. The article cites the failure rates of the iPod and PC (vaguely) at around 2% for a comparison. Furthermore, considering this is coming from an EB Game rep, it likely means that this number is only represenative of people who bought a warranty plan with the organization and didn't deal directly with Microsoft to have their system's failure addressed (any may exclude some that did buy and just went straight to MS). Also, this likely doesn't take into account the individuals who have returned multiple systems, some online reports claiming upwards of eight units returned since first purchasing the device. This may truly go down as one of the worst generations of gaming systems (at least the beginning phases of it) based on how poorly executed the 360 and PS3 are currently. At least the Wii is providing some hope, but its game drought may be an issue.
