good morning, my fellow crappers, the random question for today is what movies have you watched where the violence has affected you?

Evil Dead II influenced me to hack off my right hand and then replace it with a chainsaw. Of course, typing is now a bit difficult but that doesn't matter so much...

I don't think violence in movies has ever really done anything to me, except making me a bit numb to violence in general. I grew up with my parents working shift work, so a good bit of the time it would be one parent watching four of us. So my bro and I would watch whatever we wanted on the premium channels (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, TMC). From like 4-9, we watched so many horror movies that we became immune to pretty much anything they did. I haven't watched a horror movie since House of 1000 Corpses, just because none of them shock me anymore.

Violence has become such common place in films, that it takes a rare film to bring out the real effect of it. Certainly, Saving Private Ryan brought out the reality of violence. It's an effective movie. But it takes even more work to bring it out in fiction. The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, where 90% of the violence is off screen, can still make me shiver. Movie violence is darkest when left to the imagination. We can't really see Franklin being sawed by Leather Face. What we see is the horror on his sister's face as she watches. She watches for us, and we can read the horror on her face and hear it in her screams. I don't think a film has presented violence as horrifyingly effective as that since. Certainly no horror film has. Se7en, where none of the violence appears on screen at all, does a good job with the subject matter. The whole film is about the effect that terrible violence can have on a person who is forced to deal with it every day. Detective Sommerset is not Dirty Harry. No matter how numb a person forces themself to become towards real violence, they're going to have to deal with it eventually. If they don't, and become completely complacent towards it, they're no different then the sociopaths. Very interesting quandry. It speaks to the films strengths that it can walk that line itself.

Not in a movie(but in a show that's like a long movie in a way), but in The Wire season 4 there is a part where a man who is supposedly a child molester is beaten to death. It is very graphic, brutal, unglorified, and just disturbing. Chris and Snoop confront him and Chris asks him if he likes boys and he says no, then he talks about being in prison and the beating starts. Chris just beats the guy in the face until he is dead and they don't censor any of it. And Chris is very enraged the whole time he is beating.
So in short The Wire is greatest show ever.

Robocop - Where that gang (forget the lead villians name) kill Officer Murphy...most disturbing death scene ever IMO. I was too young to watch that movie the first time I saw it. That scene absolutely haunted me. Also the part where the guy gets covered in acid and then hit by the car and splatters. I think I almost puked.

i hate any graphic voilence to young-ish women and girls in movies, especially if rape is involved, it just makes me uncomfortable
I prefer real violence as opposed to the gore of most horror movies

When it comes to television, Tony Soprano takes the cake. There's a scene from the 1st Season episode, "College" that seriously disturbs me. It's only the 5th episode ever. Tony has taken Meadow to look at colleges in Maine. The way a good father and family man would do. But on the trip we get our real taste of the dark sociopath that Tony really is underneath all those family values. While in town, Tony recognizes a guy who turned state's witness on the mob. The whole episode is shot like a horror film with Tony playing the part of the slasher. The tension is built as he stalks his prey while Meadow is left to hang out at a college party. When he finally gets the chance to pounce it's probably the most disturbing death I've ever seen in TV or the movies. I still have trouble watching, or even listening to the scene. Tony strangles the "rat" with a bundle of wires as he helplessly pleads for his life. The scene is long and agonizing to watch. It's one very long shot (unless you're watching on A&E where it's over in about 4 seconds.) If you can loook at the screen, you're forced to look into a man's eyes as he slowly, slowly dies. Gasping and wheezing for breath the whole time. It's sick. When it's mercifully over, Tony just goes about his family business (real family, not that thing of his) as if nothing ever happened. Even when his daughter questions him as to why his hand is bleeding. Just another day at the office. It was our first, and by far most disturbing glimpse into the sociopathic nature of Tony Soprano. This past season where Tony killed Christopher was really only a reminder of this.
