Thoughts.
I saw Roger Waters and while he was an integral part in the mix it might as well have been a tribute band.
So I was wondering, because I've seen decent tribute bands, what your thoughts were? Would you pay to see a good one? Who would you see?
I have a friend who plays in a rather successful pink floyd band. They don't make any money but at least they have a built in crowd who's not afraid to pay ten bucks a pop at a local small time theatre.

Nope, no band should be made for the sole purpose of being a tribute to another band

Actually, I am going in August to see Swan Song, a Zep Tribute band. Supposedly, there are the DEFINITIVE tribute to LZ. We'll see.....

Cover songs, maybe. Tribute bands no. It's a sign of respect, I suppose, but I've no interest in it.

I agree....and I would add the same for the Gilmour-led Pink Floyd in the late 1980s/1990s....

So performing anothers music is good, dressing up and pretending to be them is bad.
What about orchestras? They play music hundreds of years old. Perhaps they fall into the cover band category.
I saw a few bands where noone really pretended to be the person, they were just playing the musical part. is that cover band domain?
What makes a band a cover band and vice versa.
Look I will leave this up to all of you for I need to dole out my (before 5000) posts judiciously.

The way I see it, if a band is dressed up as said rock group they are going to pay tribute to, then I'll label them as a "tribute band" since they're paying homage to that particular sound and appearance. If they're willing to go the whole nine yards trying to be for example Led Zeppelin, then it would only be fitting to call them a "tribute band".

Tribute bands are like those WWE knock-off wrestlers you find at small shows. Give me the real thing.

The only tribute bands I'll pay attention to are KISS bands, and that's only to see:
A. How bad their costumes are B. How absolutely silly they look trying to strut like Paul or be evil like Gene C. The occasional wise-ass bands that give us a Vinnie Vincent instead of Ace.

If Roger Waters is his own tribute band, then Ozzy performing Black Sabbath songs with his solo band is a "tribute" band. And the Gilmour-led Floyd had three of the four key members. That's more then The Who or The Rolling Stones do currently. Jed Shaffer ~I'd pay to hear someone try to be a Syd Barrett tribute band.

It all depends.....
I would pay to see one of my favorite bands doing a "tribute" to a certain group or album. For example, I paid for a disc of Dream Theater doing "Dark Side of the Moon" and it was money well spent in my opinion. Heck, I just participated in a "tribute" to Stan Kenton the other night.
The only real "tribute" band (where a band is put together strictly to perform another group's catalogue) that I would fork over good money to see is "Zappa plays Zappa" but I don't have a problem with people that want to pay to see tribute bands like the Zeppelin one mentioned here. It's their money, they can do with it what they want.

A number of tribute bands come through here quite often. My favorite is the all male Go Go's cover band We Got The Meat.

Apparently there's a female Iron Maiden tribute band out there called The Iron Maidens (duh!). That said unless there's some sort of novelty like that, Tribute bands bore me. I don't mind cover bands though.

Whatever happened to... y'know... originality? I don't mind a cover song being thrown in once in a while in a live show (my boys Alter Bridge do this all the time), but an entire band devoted solely to doing other people's music... or worse yet, the tribute bands who dress up and act just like some other band... it's sad, really.

I happen to adore Aussie Floyd who not only pays tribute but does it in such a way I feel i am actualy back in the days when Pink Floyd actually did concerts...I love it

Well, it's also the easiest way to make money in music. That's the main reason people do it. Don't hate the players, hate the game.

There's something to be said about quality players playing loud smurfin' quality rock and roll live that would make me come back, but I wouldn't look to pay top dollar for it.
I would like to add that it only really works well if the singer is damn close and the rest of the players play for exact tone down to the drum heads and distortion pedals.
