Great super-short documentary on the Distinguished Wakamba Spike's obsession, the largely vanished seedy side of Times Square.

Oh, to have the real Times Square back. smurfing Giuliani. Thing is, I know that it had to go, it's just been replaced with such a bizarre theme park atmosphere. To tell the truth, I can only get an inkling of what it once was like from catching the tail end of the era in the mid-90s, and tonnes of reading, watching and talking to folks, along with plenty of visits to still seedy places.

Last time I went was for some autograph signing at Toys R Us. It usually pains me to go anywhere between W.23rd street and about 82nd just because it is such a mess, Times Square being the most circusy of it all. It literally feels like being inside an amusement park.
All the little things I love about New York are slowly dicipating. I live in SoHo and people are actually petitioning to smooth over the historic cobblestone streets.. Donald Trump is actually building a sky scraper on Spring St, right on top of my favorite childhood park. It's really a shame.

That's nuts... people fought and died squatted in lofts to maintain the character of SoHo. I'm generally a big fan of the middle 30s around 8th and 9th Avenue, that's where I spend a lot of my time in NYC, with some time spent in the East Village and Lower East Side.

I think the reason I hate going beyond 23rd is because it's become so commercialized. Now, I know everywhere has become ultra commercialized but when it comes to the village it's really lost it's character. There's no more of the lovely freak show that it once was. I laughed my ass off @ died squatted.
