Well he did kinda sell out when he did the Gap commercials a couple years back.
That being said, he's one of my favorites and I'm glad this album hit #1. Took him a while but I'm guessing it was well worth the wait. I still haven't heard the whole thing, I should probably go pick it up tonight.

Took him a while but I'm guessing it was well worth the wait. I still haven't heard the whole thing, I should probably go pick it up tonight. I won't hold it against him for those GAP ads. Its like back in the late 90s when people got frizzy over when The Clash cleared "London Calling" for a silly JAGUAR ad, and they basically said "we didn't sell out for almost 20 years, but its time we're rewarded by our efforts." Anyway, celebs for Common finally cutting #1. It took him long enough. Then again, its not Hip-Hop thats dying, its "Gangsta" thats dying a horrid death (and for the better) this side of Hair Metal in the late 80s/early 90s. Rock lived on, as well Hip-Hop.

This keeps making me consider getting his new album. I've been disappointed with his work lately, but everyone tells me Finding Forever is one of the best rap albums of the past years.
Though when it comes to Hip Hop saviors, The Roots should be the ones.

Though when it comes to Hip Hop saviors, The Roots should be the ones. I saw them in concert in May of 2006, they performed up at UMass for the summer concert. They played for nearly 2 hours straight without taking a break. It was like one incredible medley of their own songs, solos (so the others could take a breather), and classics. Best concert I've ever been to in my life. Although I could've done without Dashboard Confessional performing before them.

Is it me, or are album sales in general seriously down as of late? Not to take anything away from Common though, about time.

Yep, Pretty good album I must say. I don't think it's better than BE, But it's pretty darn close.

Looking at the sales numbers every week, album says are WAY down for the most part. On a slow week, you can have a #1 album by selling 100,000-150,000 units max. That was unheard of years ago.

No clue who this "Common" guy is.... but I'm of the opinion that a number 1 album doesn't say you've "made it" or anything... If you have a 15+ year career.. you've already made it, and this just means you have a shot at making more money right now.
And no, that's not me saying anyone has "sold out" or anything.... just saying that success is being able to do what you love for a long period of time... not chart positions. A loyal fanbase is more important than a chart position.

Congrats to him, he's a talented man. I'm not a huge fan of that current song of his thats out right now, but he deserves it.

A loyal fanbase is more important than a chart position. He pretty much made it big with "Be", but he's always been a respected artist because his words have meaning to them. He's the exact opposite of the majority of mainstream rappers that people see on MTV or BET. This has to be a major achievement for him. I've only heard a few songs off the album, not the whole thing, and it's got a great sound. Right up there with "Be" in my opinion, although "Resurrection" will always be my favorite album of his (although that might change once I hear all of "Finding Forever").
