As a time-waster I write short stories, and one of my favorite aspects is to add romantic subtext among my characters, to the degree that I have to reign myself in from doing that when it's not warranted.
A couple of days ago I was conversing with a friend about different fandoms, and the subject of "shipping" (or slash) fan fiction came up. She wanted to know how I would feel (if I were ever to have my work distributed to the public) if a fanfic writer broke away from what I was doing and paired up two of my characters that didn't get along, or just went for something freaky or purely NC-17 rated. Her take was that she would feel bad for my characters.
What I told her was that it wouldn't be a big deal with me. The people that I make up aren't real, so I don't think that they would have a say in the matter. Also, even if someone took my character and went off the deep end with them, it's a 96% chance that it's because they really enjoy what I was doing- perhaps in a shallow, sexualized manner, but I still had given that fan something that they appreciated. (Who writes porn about something they don't give a crap about?) Now, more than likely I'm not actually going to read the story- or any G-rated story for that matter, because I have a one-track mind with my creative vision and I don't want to know about anyone else's interpretation, but I don't plan on writing any cease-and-desist letters.
To cut a long story short, I would be flattered and perhaps morbidly amused. So am I nuts?

Yes.....but this is coming from someone who is hyperprotective of the characters he creates, LOL.
I wouldn't know where to start if someone took my characters and put them, in say, a fecal fetish story. It would really bother me.

I suppose it would depend on who the characters were and what was being done to them. If it were a spoof on a single novel, than whatever. But if my stories were as extensive as the Harry Potter series and I had a deep attachment to some characters, there may be an issue.
If it got out of hand, I wouldn't file a lawsuit or anything; just say "ewwww."

Figured as much. See, that's why I like these boards- I feel comfortable being honest here.

Nah, every writer has different relationships to their work. Lester Dent didn't give a crap about "Doc Savage" and the other pulp characters he created, only cared about the money he earned while people like Gustave Flaubert and Miguel de Cervantes readily identified with their characters. Any level of comfort you have towards slashing of your own characters is strictly a personal thing: I imagine alot of anime/ manga creators would look at some of the pairings and say, "Yeah, I could see that."

If you are attached to them, and don't want them taking into different directions, then yes, you have full right to not like them being used for nefarious means. However, if you don't mind them being taken to the next level, and see it as a honor, then by all means, let your characters be given new stories. I was agreeing with you just being plain ol' crazy.

I can identify with a lot of the people I made, but I can't control how you interpret what I do, or how you want to interpret it. So in that instance, apathy is what's left.

once something goes public, someone is going to change it around into what they want it to be, nothing is going to be able to stop this, so just ignore it I say.

It was really funny.

If someone did some slash fiction with some of my characters, I'd be flattered, but as disgusted as I am at most slash fiction.

If it's your work, then you have every right to determine how and if your work is adapted, etc. You just have to be careful about plagerism and anything that could harm the integrity of the work.
