First and foremost, they're uncreative.
I dread any popular or semi-popular thread because I know within hours/days there will be at least five more doing the same thing.
Appreciation threads, tournaments, Ask whoevers....they just, to me, lack any sort of creativity that I know for a fact is here on this board. One person starts one, and that's fine, but then instead of doing something new and different, others go "hey, they got replies on their version, let me try the Exact Same Thing."
I don't begrudge anyone who starts these, don't get me wrong. I just want to see a little more excitement and uniqueness around is all.

Sorry. Nothing to be sorry about, and I'm honestly not trying to bust any balls. I guess I would just like to see more variety is all. Not pointing the finger or anything at anybody, honest.

Is there any chance I can still start up an "Appreciation Thread Tournament"?

I understand. There are some gems in here though. You gotta look really hard for them.

I agree. Alot of the time it's a virtually anonymous poster just trying to get attention for themselves & get a bit of ego-gratification. "Oooh, NOW they know who I am." Why not make worthwhile, interesting or humorous posts? That's another way to get some attention. Sure it takes a bit more effort than starting a copycat thread, but it can be all the more rewarding when you're known for being a good poster than being an attention-whore.

I don't think tournaments need to go away but there's too many. Umm...I plead guilty (Gets sent to proboards time out corner.)

I'm not asking for anything to "go away"....there will always be room here for the various types of threads that often/always get copycatted (is that even a word?) - I just would like to see more restraint in how often people jump on trends and beat them into the ground.
Take the "Ask ______" threads. Right now, there's two active ones. Fine, that's great. But does anyone remember how bad it got sometime back when every single person around here thought they needed one?

Tourney threads are lame but the King 'O Forum tourney I make an exception because it has my name in it.
Appreciation *poster here* threads certainly can go away.*
*Not just because I don't have one**
**Because I don't want one***
***You wouldn't make one for me anyway cause I suck****

Even a silly wee thing like "Toga!" is acceptable, until we get a ""Toga!" Appreciation Thread" started by yourself or some other such nonsense. I'll use you as an example Chibi, you make humorous & interesting posts that are worth reading. I enjoy reading them, but I'm not going to start a "Chibidiablo Appreciation Thread", 'cause you don't NEED it. You're not going to start an "Ask Chibidiablo Thread", 'cause you don't NEED it. You just cruise on by making entertaining posts & don't need the ego-gratification that an "Ask..." &/or "... Appreciation" Thread brings. People recognize you because you're a good poster, not because you started a thread about yourself.
