Mortal Kombat was awesome. Anyone else love how Liu Kang killed Sub-Zero? Death by icicle, frickin awesome. Also Scorpion yelling "GET DOWN HERE" and punching a column to knock down Johnny Cage during their fight was hilarious. God that movie was so awesome. Then Mortal Kombat: Annihilation happened...and once Cage bit the dust you knew it was all downhill from there. Also, having a bunch of lookalikes for the sequel and having "Beach House Raiden" didn't help either. I saw it on TV the other day(damn comcast said it was the first movie, and it was the sequel. ) The movie isn't that bad until the last fight with Lui Kang and Shao Khan(maskless? Who was the ad wizard who said that should happen?) and in the middle of it, they transformed into these monsters and stuff, cheap looking ones at that. There it just lost me.

It was number one for three weeks, and I think I went to see it once a week for like a month when it came out. Edit: Of course, it was much easier to "movie hop" back then, but still

What's so great about this film?
1. The Plot: Okay, so it's Enter the Dragon. But it's a Martial Arts film, you might as well rip off the best. You see, this is why video game movies suck. They can't figure out what type of film they are supposed to be. Eg Super Mario Brothers is not supposed to be a science fiction film.
2. The characters: Good. Unlike Street Fighter, they picked Liu Kang, who is the main character, Sonya, who has the Kano rivalry and can get kidnapped, and Johnny Cage, who at least has a deep plot. Raiden and Kitana are supporting, Sub-Zero, Reptile and Scorpion job out, and Shang and Goro play the villian well. It's works well. Unlike, making E.Honda a cameraman, or Blanka a POW, or Ryu a thief, or whatever.
3. The Fights. Worked well. Each one was slightly different, and captured something about the game, like a rivalry, or a special move, or a fatality, something.
4. Hotties. I vote Kitana.
5. Raiden: Wow, Christopher Lambert sells this role well. Half Obi Wan Kenobi, and half Young Obi Wan Kenobi, he makes it work, whereas everyone else makes Raiden look like a pussy.
6. Dialouge: Unlike the random use of catch phrases in the second film, this one mixes game catch phrases with enough martial arts cliches and humor to work well. Plus we got the best answer on Theodicy ever.
7. Little Things: In jokes, game references, heck, Cage's Friendship finisher, make this film.

Man, every movie based on a video game SUCKS. For MORTAL KOMBAT to be the best, is like saying which dog s*** smells the best.
Maybe my problem with MK is that the most compelling story from the video game itself (to me at least) was the whole thing about Scorpion wanting vengeance against Sub-Zero....who didn't do it.
Instead, they're just jobbers.
SCORPION is not a bloody jobber!

MK may just be the only video game movie I've ever seen that was good in a good way as opposed to a "so bad it's good" way. Which pretty much sums up almost every other video game movie ever made. But even the MK wasn't all that good. I marked for it when I was like 7 or 8. Not so much anymore.

"*Johnny Cage kicks some guy's ass* '....this is the part where you fall down.' '....WHAAA! *throws himself backwards*"
That's the only part I remember. That, and "those were $500 sunglasses, asshole."

I remember being back in elementary and hearing all the rumors about the MK movie before it was made. Crazy rumors (i.e., Jim Carrey will play Baraka, Patrick Swayze will play Johnny Cage, etc.)
It is a good B movie, I will say.

Shame about the sequel.

The Ninjas are a compelling story, but the focus of the plot must be Shang Tsung's machinations to unbalance the furies and win the realm of Earth, and who stops them. I agree, Scorpion is cool. However, Mortal Kombat only has 6 fighters to go around, and we had enough heroes. But remember, Scorpion can't die. He does come back latter for the second film.

My father, however, is a Johnny Cage fan, so he had a good time watching Johnny kick ass.

I loved it as a kid, which is ironic considering that I've always hated the games. Watching it now, it's still a fun film because of its cheesyness. But as rra said, the fact that it is still the best video game based film really is a poor reflection on the genre.
