The original won an Oscar for best picture, that says a lot right there. My favorite part in the whole saga was when Rocky went to the arena the night before the fight and realized that he wasn't going to beat Apollo. But he was still determined to give it his best shot, and prove that he could at least go the distance with the champ.

Rocky 2. The best match Rocky ever had on film IMO.

See, it's funny when people say this. I mean, you look at them all, and they're all different.
Rocky was the original, no one gives a damn except his woman. No one believes but himself. He wanted to prove to everyone that he wasn't the old bum from the neighborhood. This had nothing to do with sports, It could easily have been about bowling. It was about his heart and soul.
The second one is almost like it, only Rocky knows that he can hang with Apolo, so maybe he can beat him. He's in the ghetto, and he doesn't have that much money. When you think about it (Or at least when I do, and I don't think much) he just wants to prepare for his son. He wants to become the champ. He knows he can go the distance, but a whole point of the film is whether or not he can finish first in the marathon. This time more do believe in him, so he's riding the wave of hope. And then there's his two second speech at the end.
The third one is actually pretty good, as long as you don't take it seriously. Its like a good pro wrestling show that was done in the 80s. In fact, I look at it more of a pro wrestling film than a boxing one, as it has a more WWF element to it. It has the T-miester (Who honest to god was excellent in the role, at least in my opinion) in it too.
Whereas Rocky III was more of early 80s cartoon, Rocky IV was more serious and looked like a late 80s cartoon. You would almost expect to eat your captain crunch while watching Transformers. And it works well. You feel sad when Apollo dies, you just want Rock to crush him. And it's full of epic lines, and actually has a good story as long as you don't take it seriously, like Rocky III. The difference is that you can actually compare the two, and see that IV was more intense.
"YOU CUT HIM! HE'S NOT A MAN! HE'S A MACHINE!"
Rocky V...You know, I honestly try really hard to like this film. Don't get me wrong, there are as many plot holes as Blade Braxton gets ass, and Sage Stallone sucks ass. But if you chip at it a while, it has an excellent idea. He gets brain damage, loses his son, fights to get his son back and show that there's more to boxing - more to life - than just two people punching each other. But like the communism so soundly defeated in the fourth (Although it didn't really defeat it, it was more defeating the idea of a million people shooting at each other than two fighting each other in the ring. And if you can change, yada yada yada) it looks good on paper...But soundly doesn't work out. It just loses so many things. The stories went way too quick, the acting was horrid, and we never found out what happened to Paulie.
But then you have Rocky Balboa. I honestly like this film, not for the script or the acting or anything like that. But I remember seeing this with my father shortly before he died, on Christmas Eve. He hates Rocky movies, and was quite apprehensive about seeing it. I somehow convinced him...and he loved it. He was the same age as Rock, give or take a few years. I'll always treasure that moment and the film itself.
As for the..well, film itself, it does well what Rocky 5 didn't. It had a good story (Although at first reading about the simulation, I pulled back a bit)...and it worked. It was spaced correctly, and showed the theme of it rather quickly. Here we have a guy, he's done, but he still wants to fight..just once more. Of course, no one believes in him, but he still wants to do it. And he does, he shows the world what he was all about. Fantastic film.
There, I just rambled on incoherently about all six Rocky movies. Yay me.

Fantastic film. There, I just rambled on incoherently about all six Rocky movies. Yay me. Well, its a shame when Stallone writes an Oscar-nominated great script in ROCKY, where you give a damn about the hero and his tale, but by the fourth movie, one has to "not take it seriously" in order to enjoy it. ROCKY II is OK, but the movie drags as a mother f***** in the 2nd act when Adrian falls into that coma. More of a romantic melodrama shell version of the first film. Then again, I would consider this more of a "follow-up" than an actual sequel. To say ROCKY III was more of a pro wrestling-esque storyline, is a perfect analogy mate. By then, the franchise left its organic roots for the blockbuster artificiality. I'll say it again, but ROCKY IV is retarded. C'mon guys, would YOU stand up and cheer for a Russian that just beat the brains out of your American boxer at Madison Square Garden? No, you would go Jim Duggan. So please, while the pro wrestling-booking argument works for ROCKY III, using that argument for ROCKY IV is amount to WrestleCrap-quality this side of Hogan fighting the Anti-American Sgt. Slaughter. Hell, I laughed when Apollo Creed gets killed just into the 2nd round after that James Brown opening. Serves the Hot Dog right. And you all know what the problem with ROCKY V is? Its the franchise-bottom moment when Stallone didn't bother to try to find an actual story, but his characters that were fleshed-out in ROCKY are now boring charactures. Its basically the ROCKY sequel sillyness you all like, just at its absolute lameness, and you all now turn your noses at it. With ROCKY BALBOA, Stallone needed humility from his recent career failures, and actually finding a story-hook to work with. If anything, I consider BALBOA the only true ROCKY sequel. Dig it baby. ROCKY (1976) - **** ROCKY II (1979) - **1/2 ROCKY III (1982) - **1/2 ROCKY IV (1985) - *1/2 ROCKY V (1990) - * - BOMB ROCKY BALBOA (2006) - ***

Rocky I was brilliant, and probably Stallone's best movie in his entire career. Rocky II was damn good, but it really drug along in spots. Rocky III wasn't great, but Mr. T was brilliant in it, so I give it credit. Rocky IV is my favorite for some reason, though. I can't place it, honestly. Rocky V just plain sucks, and I'll never understand why people love Rocky VI, or whatever they called it. I'm one of the apparently ridiculously few who thought it sucked.

Rocky Balboa. I was holding back tears in some scenes. None of the other Rocky's affected me like this, if at all.
I must also clarify - Man tears are OK during a Rocky flick.

Rocky 3, then 2, and 4.
5 just sucked ass,IMO.
3 was my favorite, as I loved Clubber Lang constantly badgering Rocky till he gets a title shot and then beating his brains out.
