No animal should have to go through that, and no person with loving kindness in their heart should have to witness it.

I see this crap all the time, my mom always stops, rush hour or not. Once this couple hit a small dog, slammed on their brakes, everyone thought it was a wreck but then we saw them and their kids gathered around the dog and wrapping it up in the blanket. It was nice.

My mom stopping for animals crossing the street is how I got most of my pets.

One of the most heartbreaking incidents in my life was similar. Early one morning, I was driving to work down a lonely farm-to-market road (about 10 years back or so), and I ran out of gas. I was going to the (very few) houses that were out there trying to either get help with gas or to use a phone, but no one was home at any of the houses. There was this dog, BIG dog, that was around, and it started following me. Not menacing, just bored I guess, so it tried to tag along as I walked down the road. I shooed it off a few times, and one time after I had crossed the road to go to another house, it started crossing as well. This mini-van going at 60 mph came out of nowhere and hit it in the middle of the road and it had to have flown up about 20 feet in the air.
They stopped, the driver just kinda looked at me and I was just in shock over what I'd just seen. Then they slowly started driving away. I couldn't even bring myself to go look to see if the dog was still alive, and I've felt like s*** for a decade since because I basically caused it.

I have two dogs, so those are very sad story. Especially as one of our dogs is young and reckless.

Damn that's disgusting! As the proud owner of several pets (including a german sheperd) it always gets to me when I come across roadkill.
My hat goes off to you for caring enough to try and get the driver to go back and for helping the kids.

Utterly loathsome. I think we have an obligation to look after less-evolved species, it's only fair.

If it's heavy traffic what are you gonna do though? If I've got to make a decision to regrettably hitting an animal or swerving and possibly cause an accident and potential loss of life for human beings, that's a pretty easy decision for me to make.
It is sad the dog got hit though. I've hated the few times I've hit a dog, armadillo or whatever.
