Every few years it seems that pop culture re-discovers something from music's past and brings it back en vogue. In the '90s, Tony Bennett became an MTV staple briefly, and swing music made a comeback. Frank Sinatra did duets with then-current top stars. Even Pat Boone tried to ride this train, without much success. More recently, younger listeners took to Johnny Cash thanks to his American Recordings records, Paul Anka did better than Pat Boone in the cover song area, and Porter Wagoner has opened for the White Stripes. And somewhere in between, the soundtrack to the film O Brother Where Art Thou became a smash sensation, filled with Depression-era tunes.
Do any of you listen to music from the days before rock took over the airwaves (not counting true classical) that you feel should make a comeback in the mainstream?

I'm finding myself "rediscovering" Buddy Holly and his vast catalogue (some of which I didn't know was actually his to begin with).

I'd always like to see Big Bands come back....I could probably get a good job out of that.

The Stax era
Those that know are before the curve.....it'll happen sooner than the Motown revival and far after the current Cubano 60's pre-hipster which I'm desperately trying to be a part of.

I listen to a good bit of rock n' roll. Y'know, the original stuff...Chuck Berry/Dion & The Belmonts era stuff. Love it. I'd love to see that stylistcally make a return.

Big Band, Swing, Jazz. That stuff needs a serious comeback to the mainstream. And the thing is, a lot of jazz CAN be borderline rock and cater to modern audiences. So it's feasible...there just needs to be a group that can do it.

I listen to a bit of old-school rock 'n' roll and R'n'B, some Elvis, and of course Beatles covers of the 1950s songs. I've been meaning to get into some Roy Orbison too.
I also like the Dylan songs which imitate pre-War big-balladry on his last couple albums.

Johnny Cash and Buddy Holly swing instantly to my mind. Then comes older Blues stuff.

What do they label them as... Standards? There used to be this radio station... Fabulous 590, was Martini Lounge music... Sinatra, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean-o Martin... great music. I love that era.
