I'm a half assed director with a few questions. I don't have a Mac right now and can't afford one, so what is the very best movie editing software for the PC? Also, what programs outside of Photoshop and Adobe Premier do you guys use to make animated gifs? Thanks.

If you can afford it (which I doubt) get Avid, pretty much what the pros use. Adobe Premier is a step down from that, and Windows Movie Maker another step.

There's some others that are kinda inbetween Premiere and Windows Movie Maker (although the credits and some of the transitions are pretty handy in Movie Maker), but otherwise this is spot on. But if you don't have much experience editing, I'd suggest learning on a simpler program first before going to Premiere or Avid, as those are pretty complicated and detailed. I use Photoshop mainly for titles, but there's some program that's similar but free ( I forget the name..Illustrator?).

The cheapest way you can go is adobe premiere elements, its under 100 dollars sometimes cheaper. It comes with a handbook and it's how I put together all my animated shorts that i have made.

I'm really good at editing, just wasn't sure which one was the best program. I use movie maker now. Thanks for the advice.

Movie Maker is good in the sense that it has most of the basic functionality you need.
It sucks in the sense that it crashes whenever you use the basic functionality you need.
I have Movie Maker, I don't see how other people can stand it. Though I hear that they've fixed much of the bugs in Vista. Now iMovie, that's me pride and joy. Suits my needs and doesn't crash repeatedly. Though I understand the price issue completely.
I just wouldn't recommend Movie Maker if it still has the crashing issues, that's just a pain in the ass.
