192. The Secret of Monkey Island (CD) The Secret of Monkey Island (SMI) is a well known adventure game that spawned a series of famous and classic comedy adventure games, known as the Monkey Island series as well as making a name for LucasArts (then Lucasfilm Games) as a producer of adventure games, thus the largest competitor with Sierra On-Line at the time. The game was primarily designed by Ron Gilbert with the help of Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman. The trio would also helm the development of the sequel Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge after which Gilbert left LucasArts. Schafer's later work were to include Full Throttle and Grim Fandango, while Grossman co-designed Day of the Tentacle. The game's memorable soundtrack was composed by Michael Land in MIDI format. The box art was illustrated by Steve Purcell, who also served as one of the game's animators. The game introduces Guybrush Threepwood, a youth who desires to become a pirate. At the beginning of the game, he washes up on the Caribbean island of Mêlée. Guybrush meets the Pirate Leaders who set him three challenges to prove himself a pirate: defeat the island's swordmaster in insult swordfighting, steal a statue from the Governor's mansion, and find buried treasure. Along the way he meets several interesting characters, including swordsmaster Carla, Meathook (a fellow with hooks on both hands), a prisoner named Otis and, most significantly, the gorgeous Governor Elaine Marley. The ghost pirate LeChuck, however, has been in love with Elaine since his living days. While Guybrush is busy, LeChuck's ghost crew abduct her, taking her to Monkey Island. Guybrush gathers a crew (Carla, Meathook, and Otis), buys a boat, and sets out to find the mysterious island and free Elaine. When Guybrush finally reaches Monkey Island, he explores it and discovers a band of cannibals. After he helps them recover a lost voodoo ingredient, they provide him with a recipe that can destroy ghosts. However, when Guybrush goes after LeChuck, one of his crew tells him that LeChuck went to Mêlée Island to marry Elaine. Guybrush returns back to Mêlée with the help of the hermit Herman Toothrot, and goes to the church to prevent the wedding. When he arrives at the church wedding, he realises that Elaine had her own plan to escape. LeChuck starts beating Guybrush; until the arrival at the ship emporium, where he sprays LeChuck with Root beer (a reference to the supposedly unique voodoo root). LeChuck defeated, he watches the fireworks with Elaine, enjoying a romantic moment.

191. Jimmy White's Whirlwind Snooker (Genesis) 3D snooker simulator from the very early 1990s. The table and cue could be turned through almost any angle, with shot strength and spin as required too. An on-screen dotted white line showed the path of your ball, including the next bounce. There was also a "trick-shot" mode, allowing you to recreate classic snooker trick shots (well, not the one with the basket. Or with the cues lying on the table. Or the one with the girl lying on her back with the pink ball in her mouth. But you know). And if you dawdled too long, the balls pulled faces at you. Honest!

190. Toy Story (Genesis) Welcome to Toy Story, a world where toys come to life when people are not present. It's an imaginative animated fantasy where a unique assortment of toys take on a life of their own and become involved in a series of comic misadventures. Central to the story is a pull-string cowboy named Woody — and his other toy friends. Woody is six-year-old Andy’s favorite toy and sits in the coveted place of honor on Andy’s bed. Life for Woody is pretty good and it looks like he’ll remain the favorite toy for years to come. That is, until Andy’s birthday party! Birthdays mean new toys and new toys mean old toys may be forgotten! To be forgotten is one of the biggest fears that all toys share. Anxious to see if Andy received any new toys, Woody sends in the green army men on a recon mission to find out. Soon they hear the news that changes all of their lives as toys — there's a new toy in town named Buzz Lightyear. Buzz is the latest super-powered-karate-chopping-bser-blasting-space-hero-action-figure and it looks like he's an instant favorite with Andy! This comes as a great shock to Woody, who now must cope with being #2 in Andy’s world. His answer is to try to knock Buzz behind the dresser and into obscurity by using R. C. Car. Woody’s plan backfires and he unintentionally sends Buzz out of Andy’s window and into the real world. The rest of the toys see what happens and unite against Woody for sending Buzz to certain doom. Woody takes it upon himself to rescue Buzz and restore peace to the world of Andy’s toys.

189. James Bond: The Duel (Genesis) James Bond: The Duel is a James Bond video game released for the Sega Master System, the Sega Game Gear and the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It is loosely based on the spy films featuring Ian Fleming's secret agent, 007. Armed with a pistol, the player controls James Bond through various side-scrolling levels to locate and disarm bombs, as well as save female hostages. Along the way, Bond must battle numerous thugs and familiar bosses. The game is often compared to Namco's Rolling Thunder series, although it was much less popular with the critics. The Duel is notable among Bond games for a number of reasons. Although it was released 4 years after Timothy Dalton's last outing as James Bond (in Licence to Kill) his likeness is used in the game, most notably the opening screens (presumably as Dalton was still under contract to appear in future films), thus making it Dalton's last appearance in a Bond game to date. It was also the final Bond game to be released by Domark, who had released a series of Bond themed games beginning in 1985 with A View to a Kill. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, it was the first Bond game not to be directly based on a movie or novel. Instead it featured an original storyline, albeit one featuring familiar villains including Jaws and Oddjob. Though The Duel's storyline was not its strong point, it did blaze a trail for future licence-holders EA, half of whose Bond output would be based on original storylines. One previous Bond game, the Delphine developed The Stealth Affair, included an original storyline but the game was originally based on a generic Bond-style character named John Glames and only had the licence added for its US release. The game was developed and published by Domark and released in 1993.

188. Kriss Kross: Make My Video (CD) Kris Kross: Make My Video was created as a video game by Digital Pictures in 1992, due to the popularity of the rap group Kris Kross. The game puts the player in control of editing the music videos for the group on 3 different songs, Jump, I Missed The Bus, and Warm It Up. Players are given instructions of what they should include in the video, and then the song is played while you edit the video live. Players can change between video clips available by pressing the buttons on the controller, and have the option between clips from the videos of the group, stock footage, movie clips, and special effects. The game turned out to be a huge failure, both financially and critically. It is on Seanbaby's Crapstravaganza list of the 20 worst games of all time at #18

187. English Club Soccer (Genesis) European Club Soccer is a 1992 football videogame by Krisalis released for the Sega Mega Drive mostly based on Manchester United Europe, released one year before for the Commodore Amiga, among other platforms. Like the previously endorsed game, European Club Soccer focus on european competitions, but with only on the European Champions Cup, which can be explained by the lower capacity of the console and the lack of differences between competitions other than the number of teams. If the player won the Champions Cup, the ending credits will only appear if the player beats a South American team in the Intercontinental Cup. Until the release of FIFA Int. Soccer roughly two years later, it was considered the best football game in the console and the one with more detailed graphics. The game only allows to play friendlies and the Champions' Cup. Options allow to choose game length (from 4 to 90 minutes), difficulty and player change control. There are two known cheat codes: adding "THREE SHREADDED WHEAT" in different lines allows the player teams to shoot harder with simply button touches, "QUITTER" allows quitting and still winning the match. European Club Soccer has dozens of teams from all across Europe (around 170), and each country was represented by at least two teams. In addition to correct club names, it also has perfectly recognizable imitations of team badges and kits, although the plain kits (which can also be changed with an editor) mean teams with other than plain kits like Juventus, FC Porto or Celtic F.C., for instance would have their kits simplified (Juventus had a silver shirt, Porto blue and Celtic green). Player names, on the other hand, were made by mixing names found on real squads, with some poor results. Portuguese teams, for instance, had a large number of Yugoslavian players in the early nineties, and that was reflected by players with names such as Valentim Ivic (of Valentim Loureiro and Tomislav Ivic, then Boavista FC chairman and SL Benfica manager, respectively). Names could not be changed, and since the game lacked a battery (like the vast majority of games then), it does not store changes done to kits and passwords were used to resume tournaments (example of a password sheet). Gameplay is simple, and works only with two of the buttons of the gamepad - B was used to pass the ball low, and C to lob the ball. While a typical button to shoot is absent, if a button is held pressed, when released the ball goes at a much higher speed. The directional button could also be used to give aftertouch in lobbed balls and change direction or touching the ball backwards with the heel in low passes. Optionally, the A button can be used to swap to the nearest player, if the automatic option is disabled. There are several ways to score goals, including crosses from the line, high balls, fooling the goalkeeper, strong shots and also free kicks, but the way the game is more recalled for is simply making a lob from the center circle (the precise spot changes according to the quality of the team) with a midfielder, and head the ball from the top of the area, taking advantage of the misplaced goalkeeper, that dives to knock the ball where it is supposed to hit the grass. The game puts several tactics at the disposal of the player, while the computer has a predefined tactic for each team. Each tactic has its own advantage: the 4-3-3 tactic using a sweeper is the only one that allows a player to recover if the goalkeeper is beaten and 4-4-2 allows great midfield control from the wings, for instance.

186. RBI Baseball 3 (Genesis) RBI Baseball 3 is the second sequel to the popular Nintendo game RBI Baseball. The game play is very similar to the original RBI game, with a few differences. For one thing the players are skinnier. As well, players are able to jump and dive, abilities which were not available in the original. RBI 3 also has every major league team available from the 1990 season, as well as postseason teams from 1983-1989

184. Truxton (Genesis) Truxton is a vertical scrolling shooter arcade game developed by Toaplan in 1988. Like many other shooters, the game is set in space, where the player takes control of a small spaceship across several planets. The game is played with an 8-way joystick and two buttons (a shot and a bomb button) through 8 levels with non-stop action and 5 bosses. By picking up items the player can upgrade his/her ship. Picking an S increases the speed (up to four times), picking a B increases the number of bombs, pick up 5 Ps to increase power by 1 degree, up to 4 P remain if the player dies. Pick up 1up or 2up icons to increase the number of lives. Pick up a red icon for a "Power shot", a green icon for a "Tatsujin beam" or a blue icon for the "Sun Laser". The soundtrack was composed by Masahiro Yuge.

183. NFL Quarterback Club (32X) It may not have Madden-quality gameplay, but at least it's a nice-looking, polished football game. The graphics are not a huge step up from the Genesis, but the difference shows. The players are realistic-looking and smoothly animated. The field looks great and features a colorful crowd. Even the play-calling screen is attractive. The crowd noise and sound effects are good, and the referee clearly announces all first downs and penalties. Quarterback Club has plenty of advanced features including smooth instant replays, first-down measurements, tipped balls, blocked passes, no-huddle offenses, and MANY celebration dances. In addition to the standard exhibition and season modes, there's a simulation mode that puts you in crucial points in dramatic NFL games of the past. There are a few problems. The computer AI is lousy. You'll want to play a real person if you want any kind of challenge. The game is too offense-oriented - it's too easy to score. The spin and speed-burst running controls are just too effective. On the play-calling screen, you can't tell which plays are running and which are passing. Still, I like this game because of the nice graphics, variety of options, and fast gameplay. And don't forget to stick around after the end of the game to see the winning team dance in the middle of the field - it's hilarious!

182. Phantasy Star (Genesis) Phantasy Star is the first part of Sega's famous console role-playing game series of the same name. The game was first released for the Sega Master System in Japan on December 20, 1987. In Japan only, it was re-released for the Sega Mega Drive in a limited-edition cartridge. Later, it was released in two compilations for the Sega Saturn and Game Boy Advance under the name of The Phantasy Star Collection. Each compilation is different from the other. The game featured maze-like 3D-like dungeons, which the characters could traverse in real-time from a first-person perspective. The story is about Alis, a girl who sees Nero, her brother, killed and sets out to avenge him. The action begins in a futuristic city complex in a three-planet solar system called Algol. After travelling some underground mazes, the characters get to travel to the other planets in their adventure. There is the option to talk with monsters the characters encounter — sometimes they are friendly, and just leave.

181. Fantastic Dizzy (Genesis) Fantastic Dizzy (The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy outside Europe & Australia) is a 1991 video game developed by Codemasters. It was published to several platforms, including Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, NES, Amiga and DOS. The game was originally intended to be released in time for Christmas in 1990, however because of a legal action between Codemasters and Nintendo over the Game Genie the title was released in April, 1991 missing the Christmas rush it was originally slated for and only sold 125,000 units instead of the expected 500,000. Despite this, the game was awarded the 'NES Adventure Game of the Year 1991' by Game Players Magazine and given the coveted 'Parents Choice Award'. In the game, the evil wizard Zaks cast an evil spell on the Yolkfolk, and kidnaps Dizzy's girlfriend Daisy, and it's up to Dizzy to undo Zaks' doings and rescue Daisy from the castle in the clouds.
