200. Madden NFL 98 (Genesis) Playcalling expert John Madden again licenses Electronic Arts' flagship football simulation. New features for 1998 include more advanced Quarterback functions such as the ability to play lob passes and adjust timing patterns, and more instinctive AI features to adjust as the match goes on. Squad features have also been advanced, with the opportunity to create plays and trade them. Gameplay is much the same as the other editions, with the full season on offer as well as playoffs and the Superbowl. Everything is presented TV-style, with play-by-play analysis and reports. The contemporary NFL teams are joined by great squads of the past.

199. John Madden Football (Genesis) Unlike the first computer versions, this game originated on consoles and focuses on the action on the field instead of detailed strategy. There is still a detailed range of moves available, all grouped for quick selection. Game play modes include regular season, playoffs and sudden death. The game features 16 regular teams plus one All-Madden team, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Play actions include selecting a pass recipient as a play unfolds, block tackles, dives and sackings. Different weather conditions come into play when it's wet, snowy or muddy.

198. The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare Bart Simpson falls asleep while studying and wakes up in a strange universe where TVs and fairies roam the streets. The player must find Bart's lost homework and progress through the various levels to keep the homework pages and eventually return to reality. The game is split in two parts. The first is set on a street (probably Evergreen Terrace, but referred to as Windy World). Bart walks around and has to find pages of his homework while avoiding enemies such as post boxes, Lisa and various characters from the show. Bart can collect his skateboard, which acts as a power-up and temporarily increases the player's speed. Principal Skinner occasionally appears and tries to dress Bart in his Sunday suit. If the player walks into Skinner, Bart will change appearance and become very slow and not be able to fire at enemies. The suit will also protect him from all enemies and will not take damage. When a page is found in Windy World, the player must jump onto it, where Bart will shrink down on the page, and the player has to choose one out of a selection of two randomly chosen mini-games. The player must point Bart to one of the two color-coded doors to play a mini-game and retrieve a lost page of Bart's homework (if the player doesn't choose, Bart will automatically select the left-hand side door). The doors and games are: * The blue door: Bartman, where Bart flies over Springfield as a superhero. Along the way he fights many bosses, including Sherri and Terri, Barney Gumble, Waylon Smithers (you face him twice), and eventually Mr. Burns. Bart also receives power-ups from Apu in this level. * The orange door: Indiana Bart, where Bart must navigate the maze-like "Temple of Maggie" * The green door: Bartzilla, where Bart must stomp through the streets of Springfield, eventually climbing the Springfield State Building and fighting "Homer Kong" and "Momthra." * The yellow door: Itchy and Scratchy, where Bart must avoid the manic duo, as well as various other household objects that become enemies (the oven shoots fire, the telephone explodes, Pyro-Vacuums etc.) This is the only mini-game divided in two; Bart must play one half first and the other half next. * The violet door: A journey into Bart's blood stream, where Bart must use an air pump to inflate and destroy germs. This mini-game has a cameo appearance from Smiling Joe Fission (from a Nuclear Power Plant educational video in the first season of the series). The mini-games can be played in any order; the pages awarded will be 1 through 8 depending on the order they were retrieved. Upon either losing all the lives in the respective mini-game (and not getting the page back) or completing the mini-game (and receiving the page as a reward), the screen will flash back to Bart's room at night, which showcases the amount of points the player has and the number of pages collected, while Bart snores. The completed mini-game will not resurface later in the game. If there is only one mini-game left, both doors will be the same color. The game ends when Bart dies (thus ending his dream) by losing all of his Zs (Windy World will be covered in a white fog, suggesting Bart is about to wake up) and taking damage one more time, or if he accomplishes all the mini-games. The first shot is a pic of Bart asleep at his desk in his room; if not all pages are recovered, Bart's homework will end in a scrawl, but recovering all pages will have the words "THE END" written on Bart's paper. Depending on how many mini-games Bart finishes and how many points he gets, he is awarded a letter grade. Bart will hold it up for the player to see, and then we see the family's reactions to Bart's grade. They are as follows: An "F" grade: Bart says: "Uh-oh..." and this grade will impress no one. Possibly the worst bad ending in the game. Bart: sad, hangs head Homer: angry Marge: angry Lisa: angry A "D" grade: Bart says: "Uh-oh..." and the whole family is still not impressed. The second worst bad ending. Bart: smiles Homer: blank Marge: angry Lisa: blank A "C" grade: Bart says, "Oh, yeah!" and Homer is impressed. Bart: smiles Homer: grins Marge: blank Lisa: blank A "B" grade: Bart says, "Oh, yeah!" and Marge is impressed. Bart: smiles Homer: blank Marge: smiles Lisa: blank An "A" grade: Bart shouts, "Cowabunga!" and this grade impresses everyone. Bart: smiles Homer: grins Marge: smiles Lisa: stares at Bart in astonishment If one manages to beat all the mini-games and thus collect all the lost pages, the aforementioned room will turn from night to day, Bart will wake up on his own and the proper "ending" is shown. This mini-game orientated gameplay gave the game an arcade style. Although much game could be categorized as platformer, some of the mini-games could fit in the shoot-em-up genre.

197. Star Wars: Rebel Assault (CD) Star Wars: Rebel Assault was the first CD ROM-only game published by Lucasarts, set in the Star Wars universe. It was released for the PC followed by subsequent releases on the Sega CD, Mac and 3DO platforms. Although the scenario, the plot, and the variety of missions were considered neither original nor rich, the game was valued for the technical details, since it featured digitized footage and music from the original movies, and full speech. Rebel Assault is one of the oldest titles to make use of extensive full motion video (FMV) on the PC. In this case the video was used to display pre-rendered 3D graphics that were far ahead of what a PC could render in real-time at the time. Developers pre-rendered various environments and battles and the player flew through these environments. Unfortunately because it was pre-rendered 3D graphics, the level of player control was extremely limited. In fact, the player could not stray from the path in more than a few branched areas and was usually limited to only aiming the crosshairs at enemies. The game consisted mainly of recreating famous scenes from the movies, rather than being accurate to the Star Wars storyline: it follows the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, but erroneously includes elements from the Battle of Hoth. The gameplay consists of various spaceflight missions, mainly confined in a certain video looping. The course of the ship is predetermined and the player has to hit the targets (usually TIE fighters) that show up; however, they are able to partially control and steer the ship so that it won't collide with obstacles and lose hit points. In a few stages, there are branching points but most stages consist of a straight run through to the end point or consist of a looping area until all targets are destroyed. One odd aspect of the game is that if the player moves the targeting cursor after firing, the shots that were already fired will actually follow the cursor. In some cases, original footage was filmed for the game with actors, and a Star Destroyer model was digitized (a mini camera 'flew' around it) for a certain mission. Most of the graphics were rendered in 3D. The game follows the adventures of a young person known as Rookie One. Like Luke Skywalker, it is a farmboy or farmgirl from Tatooine (the player can choose the gender, although Rebel Assault II dictates that Rookie One's male persona is canon) and decides to join the Rebel Alliance. The whole game happens during the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and begins with his/her training, some hours before the Devastator captures Tantive IV above Tatooine. Rookie then joins a squadron to intercept the Devastator and after the mission is over they descend back to the planet in order to stop an Imperial assault on Tatooine. The story then leads the player on Hoth, where Rookie will have to stop the AT-AT walkers on a Snowspeeder and then escape the base firing his/her way through the Stormtroopers in a sequence that reminds one of the Battle of Hoth (which is non-canon since the battle didn't happen before the Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back). The Alliance eventually learns about the Death Star project and the player guides Rookie to the Battle of Yavin. The final missions follow the actions of the Blue Squadron, similarly to the Red Squadron shown in the movie. They take place near and on the Death Star where the player has to destroy turrets, stop a gigantic laser gun (absent from the movie) and finally destroy it in place of Luke Skywalker, again making the battle non-canon.

196. Cool Spot (Genesis) Cool Spot was a mascot for 7 Up in the first half of the 1990s. During this time, the red spot in the 7 Up logo was given arms, legs, a mouth, and sunglasses. Many choose to link this design to the 'cool mascot' trend of the time started mainly by the success of Sonic The Hedgehog. British video games developer Virgin Interactive produced a platform game starring the 7 Up Spot, entitled Cool Spot. Set in a vivid beach/seaport, it was praised for its challenging gameplay and smooth graphics, as well as most of its background music by Tommy Tallarico, for which it won awards. The game won many fans, even among those who were turned off by the commercial connections or in areas where the mascot was not used. It was coded by David Perry. Cool Spot was released for the Amiga, Sega Game Gear, Sega Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis, and Super NES, in 1993. It was released for DOS and Nintendo Game Boy in 1994. The game is a 1-player platformer in which the player controls Cool Spot, who can jump, and attack by firing soda bubbles, which could be shot in all directions and while jumping. Cool Spot could also cling to and climb various things by jumping up in front of them. In each level the player must rescue other cool spots, who look exactly alike, from cages at the end of that level, which is not necessarily the point at the far right of the level map. In order to do so, the player is required to collect a certain number of "spots" that would change (usually increase) as the game progressed. "Spots" were placed across the level in large quantities, and were the game's substitute for items such as Sonic the Hedgehog's gold rings (these were often used in this style of game, mostly for points). A player's health is monitored by a humorous Cool Spot face that gradually bends forward and will eventually fall from its position as damage occurs. Damage is taken by touching enemies, their projectiles, or certain level obstacles. Each level is played with a time limit. If the clock reached zero, a life would be lost regardless of a player's health. The game had no save feature but did use checkpoints in the form of flagpoles. Once walked past, the flag would raise and a trumpet would sound. If a player lost a life after reaching a checkpoint, the player could restart further in the game.

Barney's Hide & Seek (Genesis) I couldn't help but laugh at that picture, it looks like the kid's gonna roll that bolder right on top of Barney. ;D And it's a shame Shadowrun didn't make it. 195. Urban Strike (Genesis) The final 2D title, it was released in 1994 for the Mega Drive/Genesis, one year later for SNES and the Game Gear, and finally in 1996 for the Game Boy. In a fictional 2001, a millionaire, former presidential candidate, and fanatic cult leader named H. R. Malone plans on toppling the government using a super weapon he is constructing, and the player must deal with this threat. It soon turns out, however, that the villain is really Carlos Ortega, the drug lord who was thought dead after Jungle Strike. Like Jungle Strike, Urban Strike starts on a completely different setting than the name suggests, this time all over the North American continent (beginning in Hawaii). The biggest new feature were on-foot missions, where the player was required to leave the helicopter at certain points and enter internal environments armed with a rifle and missile launcher. Interestingly, Urban Strike shows a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center towers in 2001 (although the method of attack differs, the game's primary villain attacks New York with a laser weapon. The cut sequence with the laser beam hitting the World Trade Centre bears a striking resemblance to images of the planes hitting the twin towers on September 11th).
