I was surprised that most English people I've spoken to can't stand Benny Hill.

I'm surprised that people expect everyone from an area (especially a LARGE area like the U.S. or Canada) to act and speak the same.

I was surprised that, on my trip to Canada, it wasn't as cold as people said. Needless to say I was happy and am dying to go back. It was nice, there.

That such a considerable proportion of Americans actually give a crap when their flag gets burned.
Edited to rephrase slightly.

Everyone in America was really friendly when I went to New York Yeah. I fully expected every second person to be ready to fight me for looking at them, but people were so friendly and helpful.

About NYC. I had heard about it's reputation that it had gained from years gone by. EVERY place I went to when I was there was brilliant. Everytime I go to the US (and I've been loads of times, that's what having a girlfriend in the US will do to you) I get treated with such respect. There is just something about us Brits that the Americans seem to love. I actually walked back to my hotel on my first night in New York at about 4am. My friends carried on drinking but I was absolutely exhausted so I walked back about 5 blocks on my own. I felt more safe there than walking through the town where I live at night.

That when you go to a McDonalds in France, they don't call it a Quarter Pounder with cheese. They call it a Royale with cheese.

The laws the Quebecois have regarding language. Why the insecurity? Have something to fear from English, or are you just arrogant?

I was about ten or so and was visiting Great Falls, Montana. I ordered the fish and chips, expecting fish and smurfin' chips.....so I got smurfin' potato chips. This is when I learned I needed to order fish and fries because Americans don't consider French fries chips. Well... All I know is that where I live if somewhere has "Fish & Chips" on the menu you get fish & french fries. Same here for me. Maybe Montana's just weird... The laws the Quebecois have regarding language. Why the insecurity? Have something to fear from English, or are you just arrogant? I think I'm correct when I say this: They're worried about losing their cultural identity and as such, they require that the language be the kept. I personally see nothing wrong with it.

That's fine and all, but they take it way too far sometimes, such as on at least one occassion FIREBOMBING a place because they didn't print something in French. Sorry, english and French are the official languages. BOTH. Not one. BOTH. Treat your citizens with respect, whether they're an Anglophone or Francophone.

That is a bit much there, that I agree with.
But I see nothing wrong with someone, reasonably, holding on to their culture as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.

I just think that they can be a bit pushy about it sometimes. For example, I wouldn't want them to suffer the fate of Native Americans who were forcibly assimilated, but at the same time, Jewish people have managed to hold onto their cultural identities and shape a lot of the "American" identity without stiff fines and acts of violence.

Fried-up English Breakfast. God, that put Tirol/German breakfast to shame!
Friendly drunkards in pubs in Britain and Scandinavia...
Swiss and Germans aren't as rule-abiding as they're supposed to be. Especially when they're abroad.
90% of the world ignore the wonders of a bidet
Chain-stores and ethnic restaurants all over the place in UK... even in small towns.
Fart-free zones in Finland
And now for the "Norway is weird":
* Everybody's terrificly polite and helpful, even if they don't know you.
* The aforementioned politeness is doubled if they see you speak Norwegian and are foreigner.
* People sit quietly on bus/tube/train
* People buy the tickets for said transportations
* A 5 mins delay is actually announced and apologies are given to the customers
* People wait their turn on queue without pushing or trying to cut the line with smart elbow-working.
* Going to and from the stadium on matchday isn't an issue, even being side-by-side with other team's supporters.
* Alcohol is ridiculously expensive and is sold only in "Official shops"... Only sparkling piss (aka beer) is available in supermarkets.
* Dr. Jekyll/Mr.Hyde metemorphosis happens around 8 pm on Friday evening: usually quiet and laid back folk turn into shouting and overexcited drunk party animals. Back to normal on Monday morning, hangover allowing it...
* Language changes every 30 miles. And nobody speak the "official language" anyway.
* A "mil" is actually 10kms and not a mile. Beware of distance indications!!!
* People go to work skiing
