I just "obtained" it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe A7X stated they had some surprises in store for their fans with this album and the direction they were taking.
So I'm giving it a listen...and it seems to be an overly political album about the war in Iraq, and I can't even really tell if it's supporting it or if it's against it, I guess it's pro troops/anti politicians/anti war critics...uhh...wha? It's message is pretty mixed so far. Now, I don't mind a bit of politicalness in my music...to a point, but it's kind of annoying when a whole album is trying to cram things down my throat.
Now, I may be way off base, and entirely wrong, because different people interpret things different ways and have differing opinions, but...eh. It seems a lot weaker than City of Evil. I'm just...not in to it. I was expecting something different, perhaps a radical change in sound...instead, I got a mild version of City of Evil that happened to be recorded while everyone was watching CNN.
The musical aspect of it is fine and dandy, everyone still shreds a guitar with maximum proficiency, but the lyrics leave a lot to be desired.
Maybe in time it could grow on me, but for now, my verdict:
DISAPPOINT'D.

To be honest, I can't remember what they sound like. The name, I know, but I'm blanking on them.

Think of two guitar virtuosos "battling" in every song, with some screams and shrieks thrown in for good measure, and a thumping bass and drum psycho plodding along the way. .....and I LIKE the band, to boot.

A7X makes me laugh, they're the kids who complain about Disturbed's singing, but like Avenged Sevenfold, THE SINGER SOUNDS THE EXACT SAME AS DISTURBED. I hate that kind of old man grunting singing

I hate that kind of old man grunting singing I prefer Disturbed over A7X, but David Draiman sounds NOTHING like...whatever his name is, M. Shadows, is it?

I know M. Shadows isn't "allowed" to scream anymore due to screwing his throat up.... but after thoroughly enjoying them for a while, I realized with "City Of Evil" that the screaming was the only thing that saved them for me. Just like how I don't mind Anders' clean voice in In Flames.. but when he uses it too often, it can destroy an entire song. Hell, it destroyed all of "Reroute To Remain" for me.... Avenged Sevenfold have definitely lost a LOT since their glory days before "City Of Evil"

Yes, I agree, they sound nothing alike. ..Plus Disturbed is uber corny. OH-AH-AH-AH! And yeah Serj's solo cd doesn't sound too different from System. It's good but a little disappointing..I expected it to be really out there.

Too many promising bands tend to go through the "Head Up Their Own Ass Phase", and I have a bad feeling that this release is Avenged Sevenfold's coming-out party for that event. It's happened to far to many bands I like over the years: Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, AFI, Guns 'N Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against The Machine, the list just never ends. It certainly doesn't kill a great band, but I don't think Avenged Sevenfold will come out with anything as great as "Sounding The Seventh Trumpet" or "City of Evil" anytime soon, if not ever again.

And yeah Serj's solo cd doesn't sound too different from System. It's good but a little disappointing..I expected it to be really out there. I read a magazine with a Serj interview in it. He commented on the thought that the album sounded like a System record. He basically said that he didn't originally intend for it to be a rock album--just an album. Maybe some orchestral things, some classical, etc. What ended up happening was that he saw that some things could sound better with some guitars, and then drums were added in, and with both of those, what he ended up with was a rock record. So... when you have one of the leading minds of System, making the same kind of music as System, you get a record that resembles a System record. Since it was all from his mind, without Daron, Shavo, and (to a lesser extent) John putting in input, it did sound different--just not totally different. He also said he wants to eventually put out a record that's not rock, and that he has about 400-500 songs ready that could be made into a record like this. So, anywhere down the line, there might be a Serj album completely different than Elect The Dead, or anything SOAD has ever made.
