Does anyone one on here got OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). If you dont know its a chemical imbalance in your brain and you usually take medicine to raise your serotonin so you wont worry as much. Mine aint working too good. I literally checked the doors atleast 40 times tonight. All the windows and locks. For like 10 minutes I went back and forth from the garage door and house door over and over.
It aint as bad as some but it kinda makes me stay up late for a little while, until I relax. Sucks when you wanna get up early the next day...

Yeah I do. It is kind of selective. Certain habits are worse than others, and some I have broken down a bit. Some days I drive two miles from the house, have to come home and make sure I locked the doors. Other days it doesn't grip me like that. But I almost always get in the car, immediately get out and check again.
There are a ton of things though. It is more Obsessive Compulsive tendencies than full blown, I think, but who knows.

I have elements of it through autism. Sometimes I can only break a cycle by inflicting pain on myself, like punching a wall.

wow I'm sorry that some of you have these types of things. I always wondered. Does it help any if you just stop and think to yourself to stop? Can it ever be a mind over matter type thing? I'm not being mean or anything, it's just something I always wanted to know if it would or does work.

It is completely irrational, and you know it many times. Stopping and thinking does nothing most times. It actually can make it worse and build anxiety.

Similar to Dynamitekid, I suffer with OCD as a result of autism. On bad days I have to go over EVERYTHING 16 times. Its really bad if something rediculous happens, like a static electricity shock. I bring on panic attacks if I can't then recreate the situation. Its always refreshing to see other people can be open and honest about it too though. Keep soldiering on guys

Although I don't have OCD, there are certain things I am OCD-like. Washing my hands, doing things in a certain order, etc. Pretty basic things. I am sorry, however, to those that have it full blown. I understand to an extent how rough it can be.

I have OCD, and it was really scary at first. I now know that I have always showed symptoms, but none of them caused me any problems until this past summer. I went from living a normal life, to being afraid to go outside. The problem caused me and a former best friend to hate eachother, put a strain on my relationship, and I went from being in great physical shape, to loseing a lot of weight. The best way of getting through this problem, is by talking to a therapist about it. At first it will be hard putting everything into words, but it's well worth it. Luckily for me, my therapist says that I am on the road to discovery and show good signs of getting back to where I want to be. Good luck with this problem, I know how hard this is for you. Feel free to end me a PM if you have any questions.

I have it. I usually have 3 month spells where something will completely f*** everything up in my life. I've gone from losing a shit load of weight and then completely ruining relationships, it's really not something people want.
Like, people think because of my OCD, I'm really neat, but I'm honestly a slob and I still go through all the motions. It really dehabilitates your way to communicate with others, and I've learned the hard way. I've gone to a mild state, but there were times where it seriously ruined my life.

I was diagnosed with OCD earlier this year. I feel almost bad reading all of these stories, because my habits aren't really that "bad".
I count the number of letters in words. It sounds stupid, I know, but I hate it. I'll be talking to someone, reading, etc. and then I just take a word they say/I hear and COUNT the letters.
Again and again and again. Even when no one is talking to me. I'll take common stuff I say like "what's up?" and count the f*** out of that.
I've been on meds for a while, but they haven't done anything to help. Hell, it's even gotten worse, in the sense that I have new "ways" of doing it. No I do the "pencil strokes". It's more of a compulsive thing that severe OCD, but yeah.
And that's my boring story.

Wow, a lot of people here seem to have it. I thought it was quite rare. I think most of us have little things that we worry about but having OCD must be a bit irritating, be strong OCD crappers

A question for people with OCD--do people who have it tend to be fixated with numbers and counting? The main depiction I've known of it other than on Monk was in a Phillip K. Dick novel called "Clans of the Alphane Moon" which took place on a moon peopled entirely by individuals with various mental conditions. One of the characters was obsessive compulsive and was constantly counting things.

Some thoughts can center around a certain detail about something or trying to rewrite or resay something numerous times. For instance, it has taken me four tries to write the sentence you are reading to check for grammar and consistency.

If I start counting I can't stop. But I don't just have to. When I count things I do do it over and over again(man that job counting machine parts was fun!, yet I was still faster than any one else).

Yes, I do have OCD. My form is doing ridiculous things repeatedly. Right now, it's mostly with sounds I make, followed by different amounts of other things. Like sometimes I'll inhale really deep through my nose, then let it out, followed by controlled breaths, swallows, and blinks. And other times I make this really obnoxious noise with my lips. I can't even really explain how I do it, all I know is that that, along with the sniffling, annoys the shit outta my brother. But it's like, I can't freakin' help it, which puts me in a nervous state where I don't want to do it, but it's like I have to do it.
And I do take medicine for it, but it seriously doesn't do jack shit. I've been on some amount of it since February 2004. I'm almost positive I've developed a tolerance to it, but my therapist or whatever refuses to put me on something else. Next time I go in there, I'm just going to tell her flat out that I need to go to a doctor to be evaluated, and put on new medication, because it sucks having this.

^Tim, your medicine isn't working because those are not symptoms of OCD. It sounds more like a mild case of Tourette Syndrome. You know "tourettes" isn't just about blurting out cuss words and being obnoxious. Mild cases give you what they call "tics": blinking, whistling, rolling your eyes, flinching, making sudden 'whoops' and 'clicks' and other noises. Some people snap or flick their fingers, or even smack themselves. The symptoms you describe seem more in line with these "tics", though you probably have a mild case of them. So go back and get rediagnosed. Just make sure you ask about Tourettes Syndrome. Here is a link to some info. I think you will be surprised: www.healthline.com/adamcontent/gilles-de-la-tourette-syndrome#definitionGood luck. .

Hell, it's even gotten worse, in the sense that I have new "ways" of doing it. No I do the "pencil strokes". It's more of a compulsive thing that severe OCD, but yeah. And that's my boring story. I count letters, too, except - and this is where it gets "weird" - since "W" has three syllables, I count it three times. Like, for example, we'll use the word WrestleCrap. Dou-ble-you, R-E-S-T-L-E-C-R-A-P. Thirteen. Then what I do is break the word down into fragments. Dou-ble-you-R-E ... S-T-L ... E-C-R-A-P. So there is a definite beginning, middle, and end. ("T" would be the middle letter of the whole word, and "STL" the middle fragment.) Different number/letter combinations get different reactions; "WrestleCrap," being 13, would be bad. I dunno ... I can echo everyone else by saying "it's weird," and I guess that's the best way to describe it.
