Here's one I got for you. No it's not that one silly. Deep Blue Sea. When the only thing that people remember about a mediocre shark-attack horror picture is Samuel L. Jackson's inspirational speech, which is interrupted when a damn shark jumps up and eats him.....its a funny movie that's a break on a cliche, but the rest of the film is just boring. It's JURASSIC PARK except its a hack (Renny Harlin) directing sharks, which means less smarts and less patience or skill in pulling off a theme park scare ride. This is lamer than IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL. You have the scientist who plays God, for a "good" cause who cause gets alot of people eaten. You have a black guy who was originally scripted to die while SHE lived. While re-shoots forced those two to switch around their fates, the fate that Harlin, WB and the producers were actually fine with it before preview audiences spat at them. I mean, its goddamn GIANT SHARKS...and since early on we realized this wasn't gonna be a winner, we hoped those big ole Bruces would kill disposable humans in fun ways, but alas we don't (besides Jackson's demise). It's one good scene in a lame movie. DEEP BLUE SEA (1999) - **

Not seeking a huge explanation or anything of that ilk, but what's your expert analysis of the mega-hit major motion picture known as, That Thing You Do? THAT THING YOU DO! (1996) - **1/2A drama about a mid-1960's garage band that job the clubs, job the tours, and rise to success with a hit song, until they pull a Beatles. Overall, I liked the idea of the movie and its basic plot: That there is a place for everyone of the band to destined to be great at, whatever its in the music industry or outside of it or something else. Everyone wants to be a rich celebrity, but sometimes we can make the same impact without Hollywood or the fame. In fact, this film's first half is really good, surprisingly good from director/star Tom Hanks. We feel the "Wonders"' joy as they make the radio, then do actual gigs, and get the prized record contract. But the 2nd half is when the movie falls apart. Characters over-react and blow up for no reason except the script needs drama, and really I had this impression as if Hanks actually forgot that this is a drama about a one-hit wonder act, and then pulled the plug. Mind you, I saw the theatrical edit and not the Director's Cut which was recently released on DVD. I might try it again soon just to give it a fair chance.

Agreed about the second half wasn't on the same level of the first, guess it was just more fun getting to know the characters before they become the Oneders and made it 'big'. Tom Evertt Scott should have gotten more work after this (besides Dead Man on Campus and E.R.), but whatever. Was the movie that cemented my love for Steve Zahn, liked him in Reality Bites, but after this became a fan and have seen everything he's involved in. The new Extended Cut is a must see if you liked the original. Adds so much more to the overall film and tons of little tidbits that made things connect more, without ever dragging while being 27-32 minutes longer. One of the few Director's/Extended versions that'll make you appreciate the movie far more. Just a shame there wasn't a commentary track.
