I want to become a journalist, or a prestenter, and the thing I noticed is that reading the Sun at home its more "POLES ARE TAKING OUR JOBS, VLADAMIER WILL STEAL YOUR IMPORTANT JOB WHICH YOU DONT DO WELL AND DONT CARE ABOUT" while the Gaurdians is "Poles filling empty job; unepmloyed annoyed" Tabloids overexagurate. So much so, it's dampening the impact of the words they're saying. Like, for example, when a football player 'RAGES' about a decision, even if they were just a tad angry. When someone really goes into a rage, it's at the same level as that other guy who wasn't so angry.

Well as a student reporter and free lancer, for the past five years or so, individual journalist don't really get slammed that much, instead its the faceless mass media, that even some journalist slam. A lot of people don't have the guts to point the finger at who they really want to blame or are just too ignorant to know who attack, hence we have the mass media or insurgents for that matter, but I digress.

It's a tough business. I'm trying to break into it right now. People give you a 'look' when you tell them what you do.

Journalists are just whores pushing an agenda, but f*** Heather Mills. To paraphrase Patton if I was stuck in the middle between the two I'd attack in both directions.

Just like people from Washington are right-wing pyschopaths (Because the presaident is in Washington)? Remember: There is no such thing as a true stereotype.

Actually, I think Journalists deserve more because I truely believe they don't do ENOUGH.
Where were they before the Iraq war?

Tell me, have you talked to many journalists, any personally? Talk to them, and tell me they ARE agenda pushing whores. Also, the point of my last post was illustrating how absurd it is to judge the entirety of something on a single/minimal figure.

For those of you who are less than happy with journalists, are you referring to them all, or are you at least differentiating between broadcast, print, national, small town, etc.?
I've never been to Iraq, so I'm not going to defend or chastise what's written about the war. But at least give credit to those of us who cover the basics.

Well I'd like to add something to this I think Disco Stu summed it up pretty well. In short QFT.

Washington correspondents are pretty much their own breed. Kinda like sports reporters are completely different from your bog-standard town reporter. Just because some Washington correspondents are whores, doesn't mean all of us journalists are. In summation:

What are we talking about again? Whether or not you sleep. And the overall integrity of journalists. And whether they get a raw deal.

TV journalists aren't really deserving of the name "journalists".
Most of them are more like tabloid monkeys, always looking for a "scandal" to sell/appear more and more.
You're not even supposed to know how a good journalist looks like, because the best way to work is keeping your mouth shut and writing well-thought and well-documented articles.
Not trying to make a star out of yourself through your job.

Journalism in pushing an agenda or ratings? Smurf them.
Journalism as in responsible journalism? Power to you, but you know what business you're getting into.

I went to school for journalism, and did my share of time as a print reporter (usually sports or feature pieces), and to be honest, I think many of us kinda got the hose thanks in large part to suffer from the celeb-reporter syndrome. It's not about the story, it's about getting yourself over, and that's pretty much rule number one in the "don't f***ing do that" book we all learned on day one.
To be fair, though, getting yourself over is really the only way to break into "big bucks", and I use that term laughably. Give you an idea, when I got out of school, the starting salary for a print reporter in this area (SW Ohio) was roughly 14,000 per, which sucks all kinsd of ass. I had two classmates, one became a program director for a network affiliate in Virginia, and the other went to work for the AP. The one that wound up working in TV was all excited, back in 1999, when he got a "big raise" to a whopping 20,000 per year. My buddy with the AP, well, he's been in Iraq now since the war started, and his lofty annual salary isn't quite to 30,000.
Pretty much what I'm saying is, while it sucks that so many are pushing to put themselves ahead of the story by adopting some kind of agenda, those are the ones that become famous and wind up making good money. Those that stay true to the ideal of staying neutral and the story coming first wind up working two jobs much of the time just to make ends meet.
