I just accidentally won an auction - there's no way out of this, is there? I was considering bidding at the very end of an auction for a VCR, and hit the button by mistake when I had decided not to put the bid through.

Shoot an e-mail to the guy who started the auction. Most sellers are really cool about this stuff. He could probably go to the next highest bidder and offer it to him.

That's exactly what I've done - what I want is a DVD-R/VHS combi, and he was selling a VHS. Want to finally get rid of those old VHS, and finance the combi by selling my vids.

Threaten him, use all capitals and say you know where he lives.

Threaten him, use all capitals and say you know where he lives. Technically he does.

Here's me warning you against combo machines. I have one (not DVDR) and the VHS side keeled over on me, leaving me with a host of unusable tapes.

I agree with Karisma. Even my $50 Wal-Mart junk brand of DVDR has been more reliable than the VHS side of the combo machines that I've heard about. I'd recommend you get a secondhand VCR and a DVDR system and simply use the cable inputs to get stuff dubbed off. This way, you can also choose what quality you want your newly-digital copies to be in.

I just literally want those movies and shows on DVD in some way, and then to sell the tapes - I've got 4-5 horror that should fetch enough to at least half cover the purchase. Then, I don't care if the VHS dies. I just want ease and cheapness.

Well, keep in mind, I got mine for $50, and my biggest complaint is that I often forget which RW format to pick up at the store and wind up eitehr giving a pack of 25 away or going back to the store. Oh, and the buttons on the remote are REALLY tiny, but what do ya expect at that price?

I'm struggling to find a VCR at a decent price, far more expensive than DVD players.

Just bought dvd-rw/vhs combi for £130 off amazon. That helps me to set a limit for what I'll spend in my ebay auction - £80.
