progressiveboink.com/archive/ robliefeld.html (Spaced for profanity) I was never big into comics but they make some good observations about a guy who, from the look of it, shouldn't have made it... So really, what is the deal with all the pouches?

This guy really hammers his point home.
I'm shit at drawing anyway, so these all look good to me.

He literally has NO clue, but he certainly knew how to make money in the bad old 90s. Money and pouches. If I met him, I would make him eat a pouch.

The early nineties were a wacky weird time for comics, looking back at it with some perspective.

You know the worst part about all of this?
While I was never really into comics, I loved collecting the trading cards (as I was obsessed with the X-Men cartoon).
The thing is, most of my artistic inspiration came from these cards, leading to a ton of over-muscled, over-veined, over-pouched superheroes that were just combinations of other Marvel characters. (Not entirely Liefeld's fault, but it seems like all the drawings were like that at the time)

Any superhero stuff that wasn't like that flopped at that time... and then those kinds of things started to flop too, when it became obviously that the collectors weren't going to make money off the polybagged, multiple-covered, gimmicked up CRAP that was being served up.

This was at the time that Turok 2 was ready to come out for the N64 with the RAM Upgrade and I was at some local flea market when I saw the chromium cover just yelling at me. Staring at it, with the inexplicable price of $2.50, I assumed that with all the Turok mania, this has to be worth something soon. It was never even really worth the $2.50 I paid for it and is still in my basement somewhere.

I just got it because he was a Dinosaur Hunter and the cover was pretty.

Turok was Valiant comics, wasn't it? I think they overprinted on that by about 75%.

Only Batman should be allowed to wear pouches, since he actually puts stuff in them. Even he should keep it to a minimum.

There's a massive chronological gap in my comics collection - between roughly the end of Infinity Inc. and the start of the Morrison run on JLA I have the 1990s JSA series that ended with Zero Hour and their humbling for editorial reasons, and about 15 other comics... many of them chosen just to represent the lameness of the era, such as a couple of Teen Titans issues like the rape wedding.

"A fun Liefeld drinking game: take a shot for every pouch he draws on a character. Oh great, now you have alcohol poisoning"

I'm certain that Rob Liefeld personally set Marvel and DC comics back 10 years at least with this kind of wackyness. Everything in the 90's tried to emulate that wack-ass style of impossible poses, gigantic muscles and thin legs all bloted out with 15 layers of cross hatching, and it's all his fault. Theres reasons I switched to Dark Horse in the 90's and he's one of them.
